True Detective: Night Country has officially cast Jodie Foster's partner for the long-awaited season 4 of the popular HBO crime series. Originally created by author Nic Pizzolatto, the crime anthology show first aired in 2014 and followed Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as detectives investigating a series of murders across two decades. Following an immense amount of critical acclaim, the show was renewed for season 2 and starred Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrel, and Taylor Kitsch. Although the season was not as well-received as the first, season 3 was ordered with Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff as partners haunted by the disappearance of two children.
In February, season 4 was officially announced following a three-year hiatus with Moonlight director Barry Jenkins as an executive producer and Issa López tapped as the drama's showrunner. She replaces Pizzolatto who will no longer be contributing to the crime series in a writing capacity. Fear the Walking Dead and Shining Girls writer Alan Page Arriaga has also joined the writing team for season 4.
HBO recently announced that Kali Reis, of Catch the Fair One fame, has joined the cast of True Detective: Night Country as co-lead with Foster. Season 4 will center on the disappearance of six men in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska, as winter brings its perpetual night. Local detectives Lisa Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) are tasked with locating the missing men and solving the mystery behind their disappearances. Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President of HBO's programming, issued a statement praising the casting. Read what she said below.
"We are tremendously excited to return to the True Detective franchise and to be working with the multi-talented Issa López, whose singular vision for her Night Country installment will be beautifully realized with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the starring roles."
Reis has only recently made her acting debut, starring in the 2021 thriller Catch the Fair One. The role garnered her a nomination for best lead actress at the 37th Independent Spirit Awards and a special jury mention for best actress at the Tribeca Film Festival. In the film, she starred as a boxer who infiltrates a sex trafficking ring to find her lost sister. Her casting may indicate the intensity of Navarro's character in the upcoming True Detective season.
Reis' relative youth to Foster, and her experience as a boxer in Catch the Fair One, may come into play in Night Country. It is possible that the actor could have been hired for her fierce demeanor excellently on display in her previous work, which may inform her role as Detective Navarro. Coupled with her real-life work as a motivational speaker and supporter of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls movement, as well as Reis' indigenous background, her personal experience may also tie into the story and its themes when True Detective finally returns to HBO.
