The Last Case of Benedict Fox Trailer Is Cthulu Metroidvania

A new trailer for The Last Case of Benedict Fox, an upcoming Lovecraftian Metroidvania, aired during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2022 event. The trailer is hot on the heels of another gothic-themed Metroidvania, the Bloodborne-inspired game The Last Faith, which was shown the day before during the 2022 Future Games Show livestream.

The story of The Last Case of Benedict Fox is set in 1925, as the titular detective solves a case in Boston. He has been called to a mansion, where a couple has died and their child is reported as missing. Benedict Fox is not alone in his investigation, as he is bound to his demon companion, who provides him with the powers he needs to face supernatural foes. The demon companion also allows Benedict Fox to access the minds of the recently deceased, entering the realm of Limbo, in order to traverse their memories in the last moments of their lives.

A new trailer for The Last Case of Benedict Fox was revealed during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase 2022 event. The trailer shows Benedict Fox exploring the mansion and the dark realms contained within it. This includes the mindscapes of the recently deceased, which contain horrific black and white recreations of the world. The trailer can be seen on the Rogue Games YouTube channel.

The gameplay in The Last Case of Benedict Fox combines Metroidvania and Souslike elements. The visuals are impressive, depicting a colorful and horrifying world that appears as a living, breathing being. Benedict Fox is able to use the powers of his demon companion to fight the monsters in Limbo, alongside a selection of conventional weapons, and can even turn the environment itself against his foes. The game uses a lot of platforming, as well as special abilities, to traverse the hostile environment. The Last Case of Benedict Fox also features massive boss encounters with eldritch abominations.

While there is no shortage of 2D Metroidvanias on the market, The Last Case of Benedict Fox appears to be a high-quality effort and puts a unique spin on well-used concepts. However, it remains to be seen whether the combat is as challenging as the developers have promised, and whether the game can live up to the unforgiving reputation of Soulslike/Lovecraftian games. Currently, The Last Case of Benedict Fox is aiming for a Q1 2023 release date, but it is likely new details for the game will continue to be announced throughout the rest of 2022.
