Ms Marvel: Iman Vellani & 9 Other Actors Who Played The Lead In Their First Role

Iman Vellani—who stars as Kamal Khan in Ms. Marvel—had no acting experience prior to being cast in the Disney+ series which is a rarity as most actors have experience before their first major role. According to Empire Magazine, the Pakistani-Canadian actress easily landed the role in part because she proved she was as big a Marvel fan as the fictional character she plays.

Like Vellani, there are a handful of other actors who were also quite fortunate to land lead roles without having appeared in any movie or TV show before. And most of them have gone on to play more main characters on a consistent basis, only adding to their impressive young careers.

Zegler plays Maria, the sister of a dance group's leader in West Side Story. The role earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, which is extra impressive given that it was her first performance.

Given Zegler's career, it's no surprise that she was one of the main actors in contention for the role in the Steven Speilberg musical. She isn't entirely new to acting as she had been starring in stage musicals for about five years before starring in the movie. But even with her theater experience, the role wasn't just handed to her. She told Buzzfeed that the audition process was long and grueling, taking about a year to complete.

Cravalho became the youngest person to voice a Disney princess when she was cast as Moana. Since then, she has had a great run, landing roles in several more movies and TV shows.

By analyzing her acting credits, it's clear that Cravalho prefers to play to her strengths as most of her roles have been voice ones. Moreover, her prolificness since her big break proves that she completely deserved to enter the limelight early. She can also be proud of the fact that she is now one of few Disney actors who voiced more than one character as in 2019, she also portrayed Ariel in The Little Mermaid Live!

In the black comedy crime movie, Statham plays a small-time criminal named Bacon who gets in trouble after making a bad gambling investment. Prior to being cast in the movie, Statham was a model for French Connection.

The role is a unique one in Statham's resume since he doesn't get to obliterate baddies as much as he does in most of his other roles. Today, few will debate that the actor is one of the best action stars of all time but in the Guy Ritchie movie, his character mostly shines because of witty dialogue and great arcs.

Sidibe stars as Precious, a 16-year-old girl who is constantly subjected to abuse by her unemployed mother. The role earned her the Oscar for Best Actress.

Sidibe definitely deserves to be lauded for landing the most coveted acting award on her first try as it's a feat rarely achieved in Hollywood. Fans who enjoyed seeing her in Precious might be a bit sad about her decision to channel her efforts toward the TV landscape lately but her performances on Empire and American Horror Story are proof she made the right choice.

DiCaprio could be categorized among the best child actors of all time since he has gone to have a successful career as an adult too. At only the age of 15, he was cast as Josh, the son of a corrupt and arrogant landlord in the sci-fi horror flick.

Undoubtedly the most successful actor on the list, DiCaprio has become a big enough actor to be picky with his roles. Starting out in the horror genre was presumably not the best experience for him as he has never dived into the genre again. Instead, the actor has constantly accepted dramatic roles, a trajectory that definitely suits him best.

Diaz stars in the movie as Tina, the love interest of a mafioso who ends up falling for Jim Carrey's titular character. She was cast in the movie after being located by a modeling agent.

For the rest of her career, Diaz stuck to the same template that brought her fame by appearing in numerous rom-com movies. Her fans are probably still sad about her decision to quit Hollywood but it's a decision she has no regrets over. Having made plenty of emotional, and at times guilty pleasure movies, Diaz is undoubtedly one of the retired actors fans wish would make a return.

McDormand's role is that of Abby, a woman whose husband hires detectives to find out whether she is cheating on him. The neo-noir crime movie received rave reviews, hence establishing McDormand as one of Hollywood's leading actresses.

As one of few Hollywood stars to receive the "Triple Crown of Acting" (Oscar, Tony, and Emmy), McDormand's talent is there for everyone to see. Over 10 of her movies have a score of 90% or more on Rotten Tomatoes too, a feat that makes her the perfect role model for any aspiring actor. Even more remarkable is that she is rarely swayed to sign up for blockbusters, instead focusing on artistic movies.

Watson auditioned eight times for the role of Hermione Granger before getting it. And she never slowed down, going on to become one of Hollywood's highest-paid actresses.

The majority of Harry Potter cast members appear to be plagued by the "child actor" curse but Watson appears to have overcome it quite well. Her current hiatus shouldn't cause any worry since she hasn't expressed a site to retire. Since 2019, the actress hasn't appeared in any movie or TV show but fans are eagerly awaiting a return.

Zendaya started out as CeCe Jones in the popular Disney sitcom before branching out into Hollywood. Today, she is not only an actor but also a fashion icon and activist.

There are so many reasons that Zendaya is lovable with her incredible acting talent just standing as one of them. And just as it didn't take long for her to prove she was worthy of being a star, it also didn't take long for her to prove that she deserves the accolades, becoming the youngest ever person to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a drama series.

A Zoom audition is all it took for Vellani to prove that she deserved to portray one of the youngest heroes. It's still early days but so far so good.

Though Velani had never acted before, her passion for the craft was always there. Prior to being cast as Ms. Marvel, she had directed the shorts, Requiem For A Pandemic, and I Don't Wanna Be Alone. If things go according to plan, the MCU is going to be her home for a while, just as has been the case with many other major stars. And fans will definitely be looking to see how she fairs when cast in projects outside the franchise.
