Modern Family: 10 Best Side Character Storylines, Ranked

With the news that there is a Modern Family spin-off script about Mitchell, fans of Modern Family are hopeful that this show could one day be made. Mitch and the rest of the Pritchett/Dunphy/Delgado family are well-drawn, compelling characters who are always involved in a mixture of meaningful and hilarious storylines. While the focus is always on these main characters, there are some side characters who get their own plotlines, which move the plot forward in memorable ways.

From one of Haley's main love interests moving away to Phil's rival offering Claire an interesting job, the minor characters on Modern Family are always up to something.

10 Andy Moves To Utah For Work

Andy Bailey and Haley have a "will they or won't they?" relationship for a while, and Andy decides to move to Utah to take a great job in the season 7 episode "Double Click." This finally ends the question of whether Haley will choose Andy or her eventual husband, Dylan Marshall.

While Andy and Haley's farewell is pretty brief, this is still an important storyline as Andy knows that as much as he loves Haley, he has to move on and pursue something that he's passionate about. Haley realizes that Andy isn't likely part of her future, something that she had been struggling with.

9 Bo Tries To Win Pam's Heart Again

Bo Johnson is a Modern Family character introduced after season 1 and he wants Pam to be with him again in the season 9 episode "No Small Feat." While he's unsuccessful, Bo's presence on the show proves that Pam has made terrible decisions in the past and that she has to move on without Bo and do what's best for her son Cal.

Bo is a great character as he's a natural flirt and he isn't someone who Pam can trust, and he injects some light-hearted energy into Pam's overall story arc, which has been heartbreaking since she has gone to prison and hasn't been able to raise her son.

8 Sal Leaves Cam And Mitch's Baby Shower

Mitch and Cam's old friend Sal is always the life of the party and in season 6, Mitch and Cam are excited when she comes to their baby shower. Sal ends up leaving and even worse, she doesn't bring her child with her.

This plotline serves as another painful reminder that Sal is selfish and irresponsible, a harsh truth for Mitch and Cam to realize. They keep hoping that she will grow up and become more mature, and yet she never does, which makes them question the future of their friendship.

7 Sal Wants To Party With Mitch And Cam Like They Used To

In a memorable season 1 episode, Cam and Mitch go out for drinks with Sal, who is devastated that their lives have changed since they have a daughter now. Sal is upset about Lily's presence and doesn't act supportive at all.

While this is a sad storyline, since Sal is unfair and she should be much kinder to Lily, it's important for Cam and Mitch to see that they won't be able to bring all of their friends with them into this new chapter. This is emotional but realistic.

6 Arvin Confesses His Feelings For Alex

Arvin Fennerman is one of Alex's best Modern Family love interests and in the season 11 finale, Alex is excited when Arvin gives her a cool research position. When Alex realizes that she's in love with Arvin and has been for a long time, Arvin notes that it might not be professional but shares that he feels the same way.

Arvin's decision to let Alex know how he feels about her is meaningful as at first, he's nervous about the fact that he's technically her boss and the fact that he used to date Haley. Arvin and Alex are a popular couple thanks to their intelligence and passion for science.

5 Gil Gives Claire A Great Job

Gil Thorpe is Phil's least favorite person throughout the entire series. In season 4, Gil has his own plotline in the episode "Career Day" when he lets Claire know that he understands that being a stay-at-home parent is tough. Gil also wants Claire to work for him and assist him in talking to the city about a project that he's working on.

This is a great plotline since Gil is usually cruel, trying to take real estate business away from Phil, and it's interesting to see Gil interacting with Claire instead.

4 Dylan Plays His Song For Haley's Family

Dylan is one of the funniest Modern Family side characters and he shines in the season 1 episode "The Incident." Dylan plays his song "In the Moonlight (Do Me)" for Haley's parents and siblings and before too long, it's clear that the song is about having sex with Haley.

Of course, Haley's family is upset and embarrassed, and this storyline becomes even more hilarious because Dylan seems oblivious to what's going on. This is a big moment for Dylan as it becomes clear and he and Haley are serious and that Claire is always going to struggle with whether Dylan is right for Haley.

3 Javier And Jay Become Friendly

Manny's father Javier Delgado pops in and out of the sitcom, often getting Manny's hopes up and then hurting Manny's feelings when Javier disappoints him. In season 11, Javier plays a bigger role in Manny's life, even connecting with Jay and trying to become friendly.

This is a big deal, as Javier is finally ready to take responsibility for the fact that they are both Manny's dads. Javier steps up even more when he asks Manny to come with him on a cruise that he has been gifted, a sweet moment that fans had been waiting for.

2 DeDe And Cam Have Been Friends For Years

The Modern Family parents have made poor decisions, and DeDe Pritchett has definitely made her fair share of mistakes. DeDe gets her own storyline in the season 9 episode "Mother!" when Mitch learns that Cam and DeDe have been close for a number of years. They have been e-mailing each other a lot and they really enjoy chatting with each other.

This is one of the most memorable plotlines as at first, Mitch is upset and feels like Cam was being unfair since Mitch and DeDe have had trouble getting along. But then Mitch sees it as the positive thing that it is. DeDe loves connecting with Cam, and it's sweet seeing her have this relationship.

1 Dylan Asks Haley To Marry Him In Jackson Hole

Dylan gets romantic when in the season 3 episode "Dude Ranch," he asks Haley to marry him. Claire gets involved immediately and tells Dylan that they're too young and this is a terrible idea.

Even though this is the wrong time for Haley and Dylan, Dylan shows that he listens to his gut and his heart, and he knows that he and Haley have a future together. It's interesting to look back on this moment and see that the couple was meant to be.
