Recently, the news broke that director Taika Waititi is directing an upcoming Star Wars project, with plans to shake up the franchise (per Total Film). Throwing the blueprint out the window, with a focus on new stories, seems like a good direction for a franchise that loves to look backward.
No franchise, arguably, is bigger than George Lucas' space opera, Star Wars, with classic characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo universally beloved. Well, almost. On some Reddit threads, conversation abounds around Han Solo. According to some Redditors, this snarky smuggler may or may not be all that he's cracked up to be.
10 Han Solo Is Annoying
As one of the only non-Jedi or inhuman main characters in Star Wars, Han Solo acts as an insert for audience members as he explores the galaxy with his friend, Chewbacca. Though most fans love Han Solo’s bad-boy, too-cool-for-school vibes, some find his lawless, rogue ways undesirable.
According to qreaper, Han Solo's scenes were not nearly as enigmatic as Luke Skywalker's journey. “I don’t really enjoy scenes with han, everyone says how awesome he is and all that but besides from his flight scenes in the 2nd movie he is kinda boring to me,” they say. Not everyone in the galaxy can be a Jedi, but perhaps taking the time to develop Solo beyond his snarky outlook could have swayed this user.
9 Return Of The Jedi Would Have Been Better Absent Han Solo
By the time Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, many of the storylines needed to be tied up. This of course was the installment audiences learned of Luke and Leia's relation and confirmed Vader's parentage, but some feel Han's role did too little.
Harrison Ford is synonymous with the Star Wars name, but some feel he'd be better off not appearing in the last film at all. On the topic of Han Solo having no stake in the story, Pow67 says, “Han was a bumbling fool in Return of the Jedi with no real purpose and Harrison Ford clearly just phoned it in.”
8 Solo: A Star Wars Story Is Unnecessary
Though some liked the film, Solo: A Star Wars Story has elements that were pretty unnecessary. As Solo's introduction in A New Hope endeared him to audiences, the same cannot be said for his origin story. Some details in the film, like the inclusion of Darth Maul, Reddit users felt were not needed.
Unlike Rogue One, thats purpose was to draw attention to little-known characters in the grand scheme of stealing Death Star plans, to some, Solo was unnecessary. ZZartin says, “Solo had way too much backstory for things we really didn’t need to know about. And the ending … was pretty weak. Lando was hilarious though.”
7 Solo: A Star Wars Story Is Underrated
While some fans were rubbed the wrong way with the idea of a backstory for a character so beloved and iconic, others didn't think the same. Solo had some fun worldbuilding and genuine relationships. Fans hope Qi'ra, in particular, may be seen again in live-action.
The easy-to-follow story and fun, heist-like vibe made Solo worth the watch for some. Between the engaging plot and interesting relationship between Han and Qi'ra, AlphaBladeYill says, “the story overall made sense and was fun. I also thought Qi'ra was a pretty decent character and I enjoy her dynamic with Han in just about everything. Beckett and his crew were also enjoyable to me.”
6 Nicknames Are Forced
Some things are better left a mystery, and that is not the case with Solo: A Star Wars Story. When Solo has his anticipated meeting with his future pal, Chewbacca, the film gives an answer to something that didn't need an answer: why Han gives his Wookiee sidekick a nickname.
On the topic of the seemingly bizarre inclusion of Han giving Chewbacca a nickname, barnacletoast says, “[Nicknames] just didnt need to be explained. Eventually they get to know each other and he just calls him Chewi.” Bringing up the origin of a beloved character where filmmakers could have left it a mystery was one detail that was not well-received.
5 Lando Was The Best Part Of Solo: A Star Wars Story
When the main character of their titular film is upstaged by the tritagonist, that’s saying something about the film. Donald Glover's take on the iconic role originated by Billy Dee Williams was much beloved and for these Redditors, the only positive takeaway from a rushed movie. With another scheduled appearance for Lando in his own show, fans require only the best.
Glover's swagger and adoption of the trademark Lando charm remain some of the film's best moments. On Lando's scene-stealing, drcubeftw says, “Donald Glover as Lando was probably the best thing about it … the movie would have worked better if Lando had been the main character with Han showing up as a major supporting character to at least show how Han got the Falcon.”
4 Han Is Not A Good Love Interest
While the romantic pairing of Han Solo and Leia Organa is a much-beloved fictional romance for some fans, others disagree. For some, Han and Leia's romance feels forced, and their relationship isn't very believable.
A now-deleted Redditor claimed, "I know that the implication is that Leia really is interested in Han and is just playing hard-to-get, but I feel like it perpetuates the false and dangerous idea that women really mean "yes" when they say "no." Although the franchise's main romance is very much a product of its time(the late 70's, early 80's), Han and Leia's romance still feels forced.
3 Han Had A Role In Kylo Ren's Rise
The relationship between Han and his estranged son, Ben, isn't properly explored before Ben puts a lightsaber through his middle in The Force Awakens. Although Ben's turn to the dark side was due to Snoke/Palpatine's coercion, Solo also had a stake in his son's turn from the light.
Reddit users have ruminated on what the Solo men's strained relationship might have been like. NoNameMike92 says, "Leia would have been busy with politics and not around enough to give him enough comfort, and han would have been caring but cold to him on the outside, along with that growing darkness its understandable that he struggled so much."
2 The Movie Does Too Much
While there are many traits that make Han Solo an engaging character, and many things that occur in the original trilogy that cements him as beloved, some think this should have been omitted from Solo altogether.
While fan service is important, doing too much in the way of nostalgia and callbacks can ruin the magic. On the topic of this wave of Star Wars unoriginality, Demos_Tex says, “It’d be a lot better movie if it didn’t feel like they were going through a checklist for Han Solo. Chewie, check. Blaster, check. The Falcon, check. Kessel run, check. Shooting first, check. They probably should’ve made the movie around just one of those things by itself, and left the rest alone.”
1 How Han Got his Name Should Remain A Mystery
How Han Solo got his famous moniker was always a mystery to fans, and not something explored in the original trilogy. The way Han's origin film handled how he got his name didn't sit well for some Redditors.
Redditor skonen_blades commented on Han being handed the trademark Solo name in a lacking cinematic moment, saying, "just have him come from a long line of Solos. We don't need a passenger designation to be his last name. That was a little eye roll-y. Like, his surname was hardly the deepest mystery that needed to be solved."
