Star Trek's Greatest Eras Converge as Wil Wheaton Takes Helm as Writer

Longtime The Next Generation alum Wil Wheaton is taking over as writer in a massive Star Trek one-shot celebrating its 400th issue by converging the greatest eras of the series. Since Gene Roddenberry's iconic sci-fi series first debuted in 1966, it's become a huge staple in popular culture. The tales of the Enterprise crew and beyond have been legendary as they spawned multiple television series, movies, video games, and toys that still remain relevant to this day. The series is even still going strong now with numerous new series like Discovery and Picard debuting on the streaming service Paramount+.

What some people may be surprised to learn though is that Star Trek has also had a massive history in the world of comics. Since 1967, countless ongoing comic series based on the series have hit comic store shelves. These stories have found multiple homes with distributors such as Gold Key, Malibu, and even the big names of Marvel and DC. The storylines throughout the years would either be direct adaptations of the films or shows, or they would be entirely new tales of the crew boldly going where no one's gone before. Recently though, IDW Publishing has been the latest home for the Star Trek name. With its 400th issue coming very soon, the company has a very special plan in store to celebrate.

According to Comicbook.com, IDW Publishing will be producing a new one-shot anthology to celebrate Star Trek's 400th issue. The comic will be an oversized collection that will feature "new stories from across the Star Trek universe." Wil Wheaton, the actor who played Wesley Crusher in The Next Generation, will even be having the opportunity to write a brand-new TNG story for the anthology, giving him a chance to return to the story that fans know him best. When Comicbook.com says that it will explore the far reaches of the Star Trek universe though, they aren't kidding. Enjoy this preview of just a few of the variant covers for the anthology that includes characters from the Original Series, The Next Generation, the Kelvin timeline, and even Lower Decks, which will be getting its own series soon from the writer of Squirrel Girl, Ryan North.

This new one-shot anthology is also loaded with writing talent. On top of getting Wil Wheaton to tell a new Next Generation story, the series will also include tales by writers like Chris Eliopoulos, Declan Shalvey, Rich Handley, and Mike Johnson. It will also feature stunning artwork by Luke Sparrow, Seth Damoose, Megan Levens, Angel Hernandez, and Joe Eisma to bring the crews of various Star Trek generations to the page. IDW has even confirmed a few of the stories that will be within its pages. These will include the aforementioned "heartfelt tale by TNG's own Wil Wheaton," as well as "a visit to the Kelvin universe" and "Keyla Detmer--as seen in Star Trek: Discovery -- Adventures in the 32nd Century #3--on a new expedition."

This legendary new anthology will be available at local comic book stores in September. It's expected to be priced at $7.99, so this will be a big one to add to the collection! With countless eras of the series beloved by fans, it will be interesting to see how they'll all be represented in this massive love letter to the franchise. Given that IDW tapped Wil Wheaton though to pen one of the stories, this massive Star Trek comic is certainly going to be one that will appeal to any fan across the decades.
