Sorting Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Characters Into Their Hogwarts Houses

Like the Harry Potter franchise, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (FMAB) has a diverse cast of personalities. There’s a political drama, a war, and different levels of character moralities that plague fans. The live-action Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Chapter – The Last Transmutation will debut on June 24, 2022, and it will wrap up the nationwide battle in Amestris.

While many of the characters are (of course) Gryffindors in this action/adventure, science-fiction anime, there are also plenty of Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws, and even Slytherins clamoring to reach their goals. Some characters belong more obviously to one House, like Alphonse and Trisha Elric, but the Sorting Hat would have trouble placing many of these characters.

11 Father – Slytherin

Even though he separated the seven sins from his body, Father is still an imperfect being because he possesses those root Slytherin qualities in excess: his pride blinds him to seriously considering threats against his plans, his ambitions go beyond just acquiring power, and his determination sees him through the centuries of planning and executing his schemes.

However, Father is not entirely without admirable traits: he’s patient, confident, and intelligent. His sense of preservation leads him to adjust and adapt to complications, and he’s a capable leader.

10 Izumi Curtis – Gryffindor

Known for her iron will and uncompromising nature, Izumi Curtis believes in proving one’s worth before respect is given. Even so, she continuously challenges others never to stay complacent. Gryffindors are best described as courageous people who can be short-tempered and have little qualms breaking the status quo.

Although she does not care much for power, Curtis would make a great commander. She is authoritative and difficult to impress, but she is committed to those under her tutelage. Curtis is a fan-favorite brash and outspoken character, and she holds to her convictions with an iron fist.

9 Alphonse Elric – Hufflepuff

Where his older brother, Edward Elric, finds his strength in his sense of morality, Alphonse is more responsible and emotionally stable. Elric rarely lets his feelings overtly sway his decisions, and he’s receptive to others’ views. Like other Hufflepuffs, he has a childlike naivete and willingness to see the best in others. Fortunately, Elric’s gut instincts are often proved accurate.

Although Edward led them into their predicament, Al believes in his brother and does not turn against him. During Ed’s recovery and ensuing mission, his little brother watches out for their well-being.

8 Van Hohenheim – Ravenclaw

Typically serious and cerebral, Van Hohenheim is a Ravenclaw with plenty of wits, which he uses to amuse others and simultaneously divert attention from his motives. Rarely is he moved to grand displays of emotion, but it would be a mistake to label him heartless or even cold.

Hohenheim prefers to keep to himself and travel with his thoughts; he spends a great deal of time pursuing knowledge and understanding situations around him. He is keen and aware, and his genius arguably exceeds even Father’s.

7 Edward Elric – Gryffindor

Brave, brash, bold, and none too worried about dangers that may unfold, Edward Elric is the poster child of a stereotypical Gryffindor. Like most members of the lion house, Elric is fiercely protective and true to his beliefs. Often this causes him to act, which is his best but sometimes fatal flaw.

Elric matches the intelligence and wit of most Ravenclaws, but he struggles to accept when others operate outside his sense of moral justice. Most Ravenclaws are more open-minded about the way they meet their end goal, whereas Edward has more of the Gryffindor trait of charging in headfirst.

6 Trisha Elric – Hufflepuff

When her husband leaves, Trisha Elric promises that she’ll raise their children and wait for his return. But unfortunately, she passes away and cannot reach her husband during her last days.

What little screentime she had, Elric proved she had Hufflepuff traits: fiercely loyal, kind, compassionate, and dutiful. She was encouraging and never let her family linger in worries and doubt. Though she essentially became a single mother, Elric could provide and care for herself and her boys. She is the heart of the family.

5 Winry Rockbell – Gryffindor

Gryffindors are known for their prominent personalities and charismatic dispositions, and they are unafraid to step forth for their beliefs to protect those they love. Although her childhood best friend, Edward Elric, often frustrates her, Winry Rockbell – who has some of the best quotes in FMAB  is steadfast in her support for his goals.

While Rockbell doesn’t crave the same level of adventure as the brothers, she isn’t one to be confined either. She’s always looking for ways to learn and grow her skills, which partly makes her such an asset to her friends.

4 Olivier Armstong – Slytherin

Major General Olivier Armstong is the highest-ranking official after Füher Bradley. She is a classic Slytherin: cunning, resourceful, and ambitious. Despite her aloof and stern exterior, she inspires deep devotion in her subordinates because of her competent nature.

She has no qualms about manipulating people and situations to her advantage, especially if they dare cross her. Armstong is quick to infiltrate the corrupted upper military ranks by convincingly deceiving superiors, including the King.

3 Maes Hughes – Hufflepuff

Although he has a reputation for slacking off at paperwork, Maes Hughes loves his family and friends above all else. He is willing to put in extensive work behind-the-scenes to help others achieve their goals, and he often offers sound advice along the way.

His Hufflepuff-like compassionate and expressive attitude belies his sharp political acuity. Hughes can climb the ranks because of his popularity and subtle intelligence. Although he is often used as comedic relief, his warm friendship is greatly valued by others.

2 Roy Mustang – Gryffindor

While his ambition to sit on the throne of Amestris drives his choices, Roy Mustang is as clever as he is cunning. He is a strategist and employs his wit to outmaneuver setbacks and conflicting plans. Though it would be tempting to place him in Slytherin, Mustang is a Gryffindor at heart.

The Elric family gets the lion’s share of the intellect, but Mustang is skilled enough in alchemy that he is a prominent state figure. Mustang also exhibits great strength, bravery, charisma, and stubbornness. Those are his defining traits. He would be an all-around Sorting Hat stall.

1 Riza Hawkeye – Gryffindor

Riza Hawkeye doesn’t back down even when outmatched and outnumbered. Hawkeye is adept, disciplined, and possesses a steel backbone. She seldom allows anyone to endanger Roy Mustang, who she has one of the best friendships in FMA with.

The Sorting Hat would also consider Hufflepuff during the Sorting Ceremony, but her desire to follow Mustang’s lead would influence her toward Gryffindor. Although most Gryffindors are usually loud, passionate, and reckless in various degrees, Hawkeye is not impulsive nor particularly effusive. However, she is polite, professional, and loyal to the death.
