Chris Evans Picks His Favorite Toy Story Movie (And It Isn’t Lightyear)

Chris Evans picks his favorite movie in the Toy Story franchise, and it isn't LightyearAfter Toy Story 4 seemingly gave the franchise a definitive ending, it was unclear how Disney would be able to continue to profit off of their lucrative piece of IP. The answer came with Lightyear, the movie Andy Davis saw in 1995 that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy. Lightyear has received mixed to positive reviews in the short time it's been released, with many considering it a fun space adventure that isn't quite able to live up to previous Toy Story movies.

While there are currently mixed opinions on Lightyear, partly due to Tim Allen being recast with Evans, it was always going to be hard for the spinoff to live up to expectations. The original Toy Story was not only a monumental film for Pixar since it marked the studio's first feature-length film, but it also made an impact with critics and at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 1995. Toy Story 2 couldn't quite live up to its predecessor, and Toy Story 3 was considered the perfect end to the franchise, showing Andy going to college and leaving his toys with Bonnie. Nearly ten years later, Toy Story 4 would hit theaters, which some deemed unnecessary, but the sequel was critically praised, partly because of Woody and Bo-Peep's storyline.

While trying to answer questions while playing puppies in a recent Buzzfeed Celeb interview, Evans was asked if he watched Toy Story when he was younger or to prepare for Lightyear. Unsurprisingly, Evans confirmed he was a big fan of Toy Story before he was cast in Lightyear and revealed which is his favorite in the franchise. As puppies were mauling him, Evans jokingly says, "Who cares?" before stating, "Maybe the first one, just because it was the original."

Lightyear may not include Woody, Rex, or any of the other characters Toy Story fans have come to love over the year, yet the movie does have a lot going for it. Buzz Lightyear is by far one of Pixar's most popular characters, so it isn't a huge surprise that he was chosen to lead the first Toy Story spinoff. Between Zurg, Star Command, and aliens, there were a lot of elements for the studio to play around with to give Buzz a compelling origin story. While it may not have lived up to the standard set by the first four films, it's fair to say Lightyear at least gave many moviegoers a memorable experience.

Many Disney fans consider the first Toy Story to be the best even though each film brings something new to the franchise. Long-time Toy Story fans returning to theaters nearly 30 years after the original came out may still have a bias toward Pixar's first film. Still, with Lightyear being many young fans' introduction to Toy Story, it could very well become some kids' favorite addition to the franchise. Evans may have been too distracted by the puppies in the interview to give an extra plug to Lightyear, but the actor is no doubt proud of his movie and the joy it is bringing to audiences.
