Taika Waititi opens up about not including Natalie Portman's Jane Foster/Mighty Thor in Thor: Ragnarok. The director returns to the MCU and reteams with Chris Hemsworth for Thor: Love and Thunder. The next Marvel Studios movie is only two weeks away from hitting theaters and fans are all geared up to see how the movie impacts the franchise.
Brining back Waititi after the success of Thor: Ragnarok only made sense for Marvel Studios. The 2017 film revitalized the whole Thor franchise; the filmmaker drastically changed the moody look of the film series, replacing it with a vibrant palette reminiscent of Jack Kirby's comic spreads. The God of Thunder himself underwent a physical and characteristic overhaul to reflect this significant turning point in his MCU journey. As part of rewriting the hero, Thor: Ragnarok pretty much got rid of everything that came before it with regard to the Avenger, which included his romance with Jane Foster. But instead of seeing Portman's character back for a proper break-up, she was only briefly referenced to establish her split with the Asgardian prince.
Speaking with Variety during the Thor: Love and Thunder premiere, Waititi opens up about not bringing back Jane Foster in Thor: Ragnarok. The director references Jason Aaron's Mighty Thor run as something that stood out for him. He admits he wanted to incorporate that in the 2017 film, but wasn't able to. Read Waititi's full quote below:
"It was part of the comic run by Jason Aaron, and it was something that we were always in love with when I was working on Ragnarok. We were always talking about how cool that was. And part of me on Ragnarok really wished that Natalie could be part of that, and then when [Marvel] said 'we want to bring her back,' it all just made sense.
She's going to be Mighty Thor, she's now going to take the hammer [Mjolnir], and that character is going to evolve, and she's going to be a hero, too."
For the uninitiated, Aaron's Mighty Thor storyline saw Jane acquiring all of Thor's superhero powers upon lifting Mjölnir. Simultaneously, she was also suffering from breast cancer, but, she refused to subject herself to magical treatments, choosing to go through traditional chemotherapy instead. Unfortunately, every single time she transformed into Mighty Thor, her illness worsened when she transformed back into Jane as the hammer purged her body of all toxins, including the radiation and chemotherapy from her medical treatment. Despite several hints, Marvel Studios hasn't officially confirmed that this particular narrative will be adapted in Thor: Love and Thunder. But based on Waititi's recent comments, it's safe to say that it will be the case.
In any case, Jane missing Thor: Ragnarok may not be that big of a missed opportunity. Hemsworth's God of Thunder needed to be the focus of the 2017 film to effectively revitalize his sub-franchise and the character itself. Given this, there's a chance that debuting Mighty Thor in it wouldn't be properly done as it had to compete with all the other plotlines in the threequel. Bringing her back in Thor: Love and Thunder is more sensical as the film has more wiggle room to tackle her arc.
