Jujutsu Kaisen: 10 Most Confusing Cursed Techniques Explained

The magic system of the world of Jujutsu Kaisen is at a first glance fairly simple: People feel negative emotions and give off what is referred to as "cursed energy." This cursed energy then creates cursed spirits and gives Jujutsu sorcerers their ability to use cursed technique.

While that seems pretty cut and dry, how that power can be used varies greatly from sorcerer to sorcerer. For example while one sorcerer might use cursed energy to power their punches, another might use cursed energy and the teachings of Greek philosophers to create a near impenetrable force field. It's this variation of cursed technique that gives Jujutsu Kaisen some of the most interesting abilities in the entire Shonen genre.

A Binding Vow is a cursed technique that is fairly easy to grasp. A sorcerer makes an oath using jujutsu sorcery and is able to gain in equal value to what they sacrifice in their oath. For example, if a jujutsu sorcerer explains their cursed technique to an enemy they put themselves at risk but gain a boost to their cursed energy.

But a Binding Vow used creatively can be just as deadly. The jujutsu sorceress, Mei Mei, uses her innate cursed technique of controlling birds to force them into making suicide pacts that increase their cursed energy and essentially turn them into living bombs that can destroy even special grade cursed spirits.

When someone is born bindings can be placed on them that restrict one aspect of themselves and amplify another. The prime examples of this are Kokichi Muta and Toji Fushiguro. Muta was born missing several limbs and lives in chronic, agonizing pain. In exchange Muta has an immense reserve of cursed energy that can be used to control  a massive robot the size of a building.

On the other side of the coin, there is Toji Fushiguro. He was born completely cut off from cursed energy. But, because of this Heavenly Restriction, he was the the most elite physical fighter in the jujutsu world. His power was so great that he was able to defeat Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, shaping them into who the nearly unstoppable monsters that they would become at the start of the manga.

Contrary to its disturbing name, cursed corpse technique is actually has nothing to do with dead bodies. Instead, sorcerers imbue inanimate objects, such as dolls and puppets, with a core of cursed energy that acts as a heart. This energy is finite however, and in most cases deteriorates over time.

However, in the case of the Abrubt-Mutated Cursed Corpse, Panda, this is not the case. Instead of one core, Panda actually has three that he can swap between, changing his shape and granting him different power-sets. His three cores also prevent him from running out of cursed energy like most cursed corpses do.

The Boogie Woogie Technique is a deceptively simple ability. With it the user can clap their hands together and swap places with anything that has cursed energy, including sorcerers, a cursed spirit or even a cursed tool. But this effect is not limited to the user, Boogie Woogie can also be used to switch two subjects other than the user to deadly effect.

While this may seem like a niche ability, Boogie Woogie actually has incredible defensive and offensive capabilities. By swapping places with an object imbued with cursed energy one can easily dodge an attack, or get into a position that can land a blow in an enemy's blind spot. In addition to this the obvious activation of clapping can be an effective bluff that throws the opponent off guard.

Created by Yuji Itadori by accident, Divergent Fist is a cursed technique that, when used right, can spell devastation for its victims. While most close combat based curse techniques imbue strikes with immense power, Divergent Fist delays the cursed energy output, creating a second impact that hits the opponent after the initial strike.

While this can be a great way to surprise an enemy, its excessive use can cause it to lose its effectiveness. When an opponent is consistently bombarded by Divergent Fist they grow to expect the second hit and can guard against it. This is why, in one of the best fights in Jujutsu Kaisen, Aoi Todo beats Divergent Fist out of Yuji in their battle against Hanami and teaches him a technique that can be more effective in combat.

Less of a cursed technique and more of a freak natural phenomenon, Black Flash is what happens when cursed energy is applied to a hit within 0.000001 second of impact. When such a hit occurs it boosts the effectiveness of the strike exponentially. It is essentially a critical hit that has the potential to end most battles.

However, there is a secondary effect to a Black Flash. Afterwards, the user enters, a state commonly referred to as "the zone" where they becomes more aware of their own cursed energy. When used by a sorcerer that is already aware of their own cursed energy this can provide an incomparable edge that makes it much easier to land another Black Flash. The current record for consecutive Black Flashes is four, showing just how difficult this technique is.

Arguably one of the strangest cursed techniques, Contractual Re-Creation allows the user to recreate the terms of any contract by burning it with cursed energy. Because a receipt is a contract of sale, a sorcerer using this technique can summon any objects written on a receipt.

However, this technique isn't limited to physical objects. For example, a receipt for a day at the spa can help the user feel revitalized in the middle of a fight. A Contractual Re-Creation user could even drop an entire house on their opponent by barely lifting a finger. While powerful, this technique has one massive weakness. If the contract gets wet and cannot burn then the re-creation cannot occur.

Primarily used by members of the Zenin Clan, Projection Sorcery is one of the most difficult techniques to grasp. The user divides one second into 24 frames and predetermine what they will do in those 24 frames. This causes the user to appear to move exceptionally fast and can be stacked allowing for the user to build up to blinding speeds.

But, one of the most terrifying aspects of this technique is that anyone that the user touches must also abide by the 24 FPS rule and choose their course of action for those 24 frames. If they fail to do so they will be trapped in a single frame for one second. In that second the Projection Sorcery user can smash the frame causing the victim to take immense damage.

A technique passed down through the Zenin Clan to Megumi Fushiguro, the Ten Shadows Technique is exceptionally powerful. Using shadows puppets as a medium, the user can summon ten different cursed spirits or "shikigami" that they have defeated during an exorcism ritual.

The secret power of the Ten Shadows Technique comes from the exorcism ritual. Even if the Ten Shadows user fails to bind the shikigami, they can summon the it at any time to attempt to finish the ritual. This allows sorcerers to summon powerful shikigmai beyond their control like the Eight-Handled Sword Divergent Sila Divine General Mahoraga. While the summoner won't be able to control it, the Mahoraga will take their enemies down with them.

Primarily used by Yuji's sensei, Satoru Gojo, the Limitless cursed technique is the most powerful technique in the jujutsu world. By using Technique Collapse: Blue and Red the user can cause their target to implode or explode respectively. When used together these cause the target to become completely erased from existence.

But the most confusing part of the Limitless is Infinity. Based on one of the Greek philosopher Zenos's paradoxes. To get to a destination one must get halfway there, before they get halfway they must get a quarter of the way there and so on, creating infinite tasks that must be done before the destination is reached. Infinity manipulates this, causing anything that approaches the user to slow down at those intervals until they stop completely.
