Doctor Who Casts Neil Patrick Harris: First Look Image Released

Doctor Who casts Neil Patrick Harris in an undisclosed role for their 60th anniversary and reveals a first look image of his character. Next year the long-running sci-fi series will celebrate its 60th anniversary, and the BBC has some big plans to mark the occasion. This anniversary is also coinciding with a regeneration between Doctors as Jodie Whittaker is set to leave the role of the 13th Doctor in her next special and Ncuti Gatwa will take over as the 14th Doctor.

While the current Doctor is changing faces, a former Doctor and his companion are also set to appear for the 60th anniversary. David Tennant and Catherine Tate are both set to return to Doctor Who, though it's still unclear if they're playing the same versions of the 10th Doctor and Donna Noble. Doctor Who has also cast Yasmin Finney as a new version of Rose for the 60th anniversary, raising even more questions about what's actually going on with this multi-Doctor adventure. Now, yet another name is joining Doctor Who to film some anniversary scenes.

According to the BBC, Harris is joining the series to film "scenes set to air in 2023 as part of the show's 60th anniversary." Few other details were shared about his character at this time, but a first look image has been released (below) and oncoming showrunner Russell T. Davies had this to say of Harris' casting:

"It’s my huge honour to open our studio doors for the mighty Neil Patrick Harris… but who, why, what is he playing? You’ll just have to wait. But I promise you, the stuff we’re shooting now is off the scale. Doctor beware!"
