Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow discussed his approach to including real-world issues in the new film. Dominion is the third film in the Jurassic World franchise, which began in 2015 as a years-later continuation of the original Jurassic Park trilogy. Trevorrow, who cut his teeth on the 2012 sci-fi comedy Safety Not Guaranteed before being launched into the big-budget stratosphere, helmed both Dominion and Jurassic World, with The Orphanage and A Monster Calls director J.A. Bayona stepping in for the middle chapter, 2018's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
The ending of Fallen Kingdom created a seemingly insurmountable problem for Chris Pratt's Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard's Claire Dearing. The monsters escaped from a mainland U.S. facility, left to roam free in the wild. Although a T-Rex did rampage through San Diego in the third act of 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park, this is the first time that dinosaurs have truly had free reign on the continental United States. Naturally, Owen and Claire must turn to the three original survivors of the events of Jurassic Park: Sam Neill's Dr. Alan Grant, Jeff Goldblum's Dr. Ian Malcolm, and Laura Dern's Dr. Ellie Sattler.
Recently, Trevorrow sat down with THR for an in-depth conversation about Jurassic World Dominion. He says that he has started to think of his films as "a Trojan horse for ideas," sneaking in commentary on the state of the world. While he doesn't describe these ideas as "political," they reflect truths about the world "without sacrificing the fact that this is a really fun ride." Read his full quote below:
There are a lot of things that people say in this movie that can be applied to issues in our real world, and none of that is unintentional. And yet, I think that over time, hopefully, I’ve grown more adept at making these movies a Trojan horse for ideas. And I don’t think they’re political ideas. They’re ideas that we all, if we don’t, should agree are of real concern. But it’s done without sacrificing the fact that this is a really fun ride and it’s a family movie about dinosaurs. So the balance in this movie is my favorite balance of the three.

While there are many real-world elements included in Jurassic World Dominion, one of the most obvious comes from the change in Ellie Sattler. While she was originally brought onto the team in Jurassic Park because of her expertise in paleobotany, she has since become an environmentally-focused soil scientist. This is reflected in a change in Sattler's iconic outfit, which has now been upgraded to include more sustainable fabrics and vegan sneakers, reflecting the world's shifting priorities around environmental issues.
It's true that Jurassic World Dominion is primarily about dinosaurs running loose on the planet. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that the other issues affecting that planet go away. While the mileage of Trevorrow's attempts to include real-world issues will vary with different viewers, there's no denying that the message is there.
