The rumored PlayStation subscription service meant to rival Xbox Game Pass will apparently be announced soon, and it will put an emphasis on classic titles. Microsoft's popular subscription service gives Xbox players access to a huge digital library of games, with popular titles like Halo Infinite even hitting the service at launch. Rumors suggest that Sony is creating its own Xbox Game Pass service rival, with the unannounced project being referred to as Spartacus.
Xbox Game Pass was first launched in 2017, and since then it has drawn many gamers to Microsoft's line of consoles. For a monthly fee users are given unlimited access to over 100 games, including recent releases like Hitman Trilogy, Halo Infinite and Madden NFL 22. Subscribing to Xbox Game Pass also gives gamers access to other services, like Xbox Live Gold and EA Play. Nintendo has created its own rival subscription service called Switch Online, and Sony's Project Spartacus looks poised to provide PlayStation gamers with their very own digital library in the near future. Xbox head Phil Spencer believes a PlayStation Game Pass is inevitable, though time will tell how Sony differentiates itself from the competition.
As reported by Video Games Chronicle, industry insider Jeff Grubb recently claimed that PlayStation's Spartacus subscription service is nearing launch. While no exact estimate is given, Grubb explains that the project has hit internal milestones and should be ready to launch in the near future. Grubb also reveals details about Spartacus' various tiers, with the lowest tier essentially replacing the current PS Plus service. Higher tiers will give gamers access to game trails, classic games and streaming, with retro titles reportedly being a big focus for the service.
While many PlayStation gamers are looking forward to a version of Game Pass, others are skeptical about Sony's subscription service. Many feel that PlayStation's Spartacus subscription service could be better without its tiered model, which threatens to be more expensive and less accessible than its competitors. Even Xbox Game Pass' lowest tier provides users with a plethora of different incentives, but it seems as if Spartacus will only be worth it to those who pay for its highest tier. Hiding classic titles behind a large paywall is likely to turn some gamers off from the service entirely.
While little is actually known about PlayStation's rival to Xbox Game Pass, rumors suggest that the Spartacus service will be ready to launch in the near future. The PlayStation brand has a massive backlog of classic games to pull from for its digital library, including beloved franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Metal Gear Solid. However, only time will tell how PlayStation players react to the tiered structure of Project Spartacus.
