All Of Us Are Dead Theory: The Military Wants To Create Halfbies In S2

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for All of Us Are Dead.

All of Us Are Dead season 2 is on the horizon, and its story could focus on how the military wants to create halfbies and explore other ways to use the Jonas Virus. While most of those infected by the Jonas Virus turn into mindless zombies, a handful of victims are instead transformed into asymptomatic zombies, also known as halfbies or zombie hybrids. The strain or version of the zombie virus which turns people into halfbies also significantly boosts their strength, endurance, and senses. However, halfbies also have the tendency to temporarily transform into full zombies and attack the uninfected. In short, the Jonas Virus is the perfect recipe for the ultimate biological weapon – one that the military will attempt but ultimately fail to control in All of Us Are Dead season 2.

While most of the hosts of the Jonas Virus were eradicated during the bombing of Hyosan City, many halfbies still walk the earth. The last scene of All of Us Are Dead season 1 shows the halfbie Choi Nam-ra (Cho Yi-hyun) telling her former classmates that she'll be back after meeting others that are like her. Meanwhile, Min Eun-ji (Oh Hye-soo) could still be in military custody, and there's still a chance that Gwi-nam (Yoo In-su) is still alive. After being bitten by Gwi-nam, Lee Cheong-san (Yoon Chan-young) could still be alive as well, and might even be revealed as a halfbie in season 2.

All of Us Are Dead season 1 ended with establishing solid foundations for a second season. All signs point to an upcoming showdown between the halfbies and the Korean military. Here's everything fans need to know about how the military will exploit the Jonas Virus and how the halfbies will be crucial to stopping this plan.

All of Us Are Dead, at its core, is a discussion on how modern society and institutions of power would react to an emergency situation that's even more cataclysmic than COVID-19. This is why the spread of the Jonas Virus culminated in the bombing of Hyosan City, resulting in both the eradication of most full zombies as well as the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians. This is what led to the tragic suicide of Hyosan martial law commander Jin Seon-mu (Kim Jong-tae), who couldn't live with his decision to order the bombings. Seon-mu's death has big implications for All of Us Are Dead season 2, as it means that there's one less morally driven authority figure to oppose any attempts to use the virus as a biological weapon. Considering how Seon-mu's colleagues had no qualms about abusing power during martial law, it's likely that a high-ranking military scientist will be introduced to replace Jonas Virus creator Lee Byeong-chan (Kim Byung-chul) as the main antagonist in All of Us Are Dead season 2.

Moreover, the halfbie Min Eun-ji and the full zombie Lee Jae-jun (Park Ji-yeol) are presumably still in the military custody. Even if they're not, their tissue samples, which were secured by military scientists, are more than enough for experimenting with the Jonas Virus for whatever purpose. On one hand, the military could simply look into making people immune to the zombie virus, which would stop any further outbreaks from happening. On the other hand, the Jonas Virus is potentially the perfect biological weapon. Infecting enemy states with a strain that only turns people into full zombies could allow the military to compromise entire cities and provinces in a matter of days. More importantly, if the military manages to isolate the Jonas Virus strain that turns people into virtually immortal halfbies with super strength and heightened senses, they could conceivably create an entire infantry battalion of elite halfbie super soldiers. Any high-ranking military official or scientist is bound to see these potential applications of the Jonas Virus, which, in any case, are bound for disaster. If the events in All of Us Are Dead season 1 are any indication, fans should brace themselves for a worst-case scenario.

The many deaths in All of Us Are Dead season 1 call for an all-new cast, and it's likely that this new cast will feature several halfbies. In fact, according to All of Us Are Dead director Lee Jae-kyoo, many of his directing choices in season 1 were intentionally made with the intent of expanding the story into a second season. Jae-kyoo also explained that All of Us Are Dead season 2 will be introducing “new races of zombies” that are immune and immortal. “If the first season can be seen as having presented humanity’s survival, the next season can talk about the survival of zombies. I hope to present viewers with another season.” Apart from the new halfbie super soldiers that the military will create as part of some twisted new program, there's also Nam-ra's halfbie crew, which was teased in the ending of All of Us Are Dead season 1.

Considering how the surviving members of Class 2-5 reacted to seeing Nam-ra's new friends, the new halfbies might even include Cheong-san, who could've survived the bombing of Hyosan High School due to being bitten by the halfbie Gwi-nam. Although Nam-ra confirmed that she didn't smell anything when they went back to check the school after the bombing took place, Cheong-san's scent could've been hidden from Nam-ra and buried under ash and rubble. Moreover, not only did the halfbie Gwi-nam bite Cheong-san, Gwi-nam's body could've also shielded Cheong-san from being mortally wounded by the bombs. Apart from Cheong-san, anyone else who was bitten by a halfbie could've survived as well. This includes Class 2-5's Lee Na-yeon (Lee Yoo-Mi), who was also turned by Gwi-nam.

All of Us Are Dead season 2 will likely feature a showdown between the halfbies and the military. Not only are Nam-ra and the other halfbies already getting organized, but they're also still evolving, which means that they could be getting stronger and tougher as well. While the military's experimental new halfbie super soldiers could be weaker than the ones from All of Us Are Dead season 1, the playing field would be leveled by the fact that the halfbie soldiers would be trained and heavily armed. In short, the military will be gearing up for an even larger disaster than the bombing of Hyosan. In All of Us Are Dead season 2, the halfbies could finally put their abilities to good use by trying to stop whatever the military has in store for Hyosan City. In any case, the surviving cast of All of Us Are Dead will have their hands full.
