James Gunn reveals that DC filmed the screen test for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It's no secret that the last few years have been a roller coaster ride for the filmmaker. After his unexpected firing from the MCU, he was recruited by DC Films to helm The Suicide Squad, which led to the hit spin-off show, Peacemaker, on HBO Max. But amidst his work with Warner Bros., he was also rehired by Disney to finish the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
As he's involved with two of the biggest superhero franchises right now, Gunn has never been busier. After filming Peacemaker and while it was airing weekly on HBO Max, he was on the cusp of beginning principal photography for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which is currently in full swing. But for a time, shooting The Suicide Squad spin-off and doing pre-production overlapped. Luckily, both DC and Marvel were willing to work with each other to help Gunn.
Speaking with Variety on the heels of the buzzworthy Peacemaker finale, the director revealed that DC actually shot Chukwudi Iwuji's screen test for the threequel. The actor is confirmed to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 but in an unknown role. Apparently, this was DC's way of reciprocating Marvel filming Ezra Miller's surprise cameo in Peacemaker.
Actually, Marvel shot [Ezra] for us, while we’re shooting “Guardians Vol. 3"[...]Marvel owed DC, because the “Peacemaker” crew shot my screen test for Chukwudi for “Guardians Vol. 3.” And then we got Ezra with the “Guardians Vol. 3” crew.
There are rumors that Iwuji will play Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's main villain and while the actor refuses to reveal his character, he has offered a few hints at who it might be. For starters, he said that it will be significantly different from his Peacemaker role of Clemson Murn; he also said that he would be very powerful in the MCU. It might take a while before the public finds out who will be in the narrative, but it's interesting that chances are, certain people working for DC are aware of this massive secret. It's no secret that Marvel Studios and DC Films are often pitted against each other, but this is yet more proof that there's no bad blood between them. It's all just a friendly competition.
With Peacemaker season 1 now complete, Gunn's focus is solely on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is due to release on May 2023. The threequel will mark the end of an era for the beloved galactic team as the filmmaker teased a death or two, not to mention Dave Bautista's comment about retiring his role as Drax after the blockbuster. After the movie, however, Gunn will be back with DC to write and direct all of Peacemaker season 2.
