On Bravo's The Real Housewives of New Jersey, there's no denying that Teresa Giudice has been a main selling point since day one, and she has no problem broadcasting that fact. Her legacy is undeniable. However, as the years have passed and cast members have come and gone, it's become more apparent that Teresa's ways are having a negative impact on the show. This is why some viewers think it might be time for a refresh.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey started out flipping a table, and tossed food at a fellow housewife in her most recent season, 13 years later. Fans know that they can expect plenty of drama and chaos from Teresa. She's unapologetic, outspoken, and willing to retaliate. In fact, she has consistently stood up for herself in tough situations. When family members, such as her brother Joe Gorga and cousin Kathy Wakile, became cast members on the show, things started to become a little different. Viewers saw a side of Teresa that hinted at tinges of jealousy, and unwarranted resentment.
When times change, so do views, opinions, and morals. There have been calls for certain housewives to be removed from their respective seasons, such as Mary Cosby from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (who won't be returning for that show's next season) and Ramona Singer from The Real Housewives of New York City. Viewers have realized the potential danger of certain personalities on mainstream television, and Teresa may be the next one to fit into this problematic category. While she has made no harmful claims about certain communities, viewers have noticed that Teresa's attitude and approach to discourse is one that always paints her as the victim. Some viewers think that she gaslights her opponents into believing that they are at fault.
In season 4, Caroline told Teresa that comments made in Teresa's cookbook insulted her, and Teresa responded by reminding Caroline that she'd never do anything to offend her or her family. She added that Caroline should know that. On countless occasions, when Teresa would get into an argument with another housewife, Melissa would be sure to step away with Teresa and stay by her side. However, the opposite rarely happened. On occasions when the woman were on the receiving end of Teresa's anger, Teresa still expected Melissa to blindly take her side, regardless of the topic being discussed. Fans have been quick to point out this double standard (and others) throughout many The Real Housewives of New Jersey seasons.
Teresa has described herself as someone who values family, and as someone who gets defensive while protecting her loved ones. However, the friction between her and her brother has been a bone of contention for years, suggesting her allegiance to those closest to her isn't as black and white as it comes across. The premiere episode of season 3 brought with it the worst altercation the show had seen, which unfolded at the celebration of Joe's son's christening. Joe has made continued attempts to reason with Teresa and help her see the light, with little success.
Teresa's stubbornness was certainly humorous and entertaining for the first few seasons of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, providing impactful moments like the table flip and the chase through the country club. As the years went by, however, fans started to become fed up with the brick wall that Teresa constantly put up during tense times. Each season, at least one cast member (if not multiple show stars) gets into a disagreement with Teresa, who then resorts to low blows, gaslighting, and double standards to prove her point. Teresa's departure would certainly shake things up, but it might relieve certain people, and help the show to evolve after its fourteenth year on screens.
