Supernatural prequel The Winchesters has been officially ordered to series, making it the first live-action spinoff for the long-running dark fantasy show. Supernatural ran for an impressive fifteen seasons and produced over 325 episodes, finally ending in late 2020. The show starred Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki for the entire run, with many recurring actors having long-term story arcs, including Jim Beaver, Misha Collins, and Mark Sheppard. Supernatural follows brothers Dean and Sam Winchester (Ackles and Padalecki, respectively) as they travel across the country hunting supernatural creatures, spiritually akin to The X-Files.
Though the series has come to an end, its devoted fanbase remains strong, and The CW has continued to look for ways to continue this world with another project. The Winchesters first went into development last year with Ackles on board as an executive producer and narrator. The prequel series will follow the love story of Sam and Dean's parents, Mary (Meg Donnelly) and John (Drake Rodger) Winchester, starting with how they met. Up until now, The Winchesters has merely remained a potential addition to The CW's 2022-2023 lineup. However, with the network having just axed several shows, the door is open for some major new additions.
According to TheWrap, the Supernatural spinoff The Winchesters has been officially greenlit by The CW. This comes along with the news that Gotham Knights and Walker: Independence have also been picked up. Ackles will narrate The Winchesters as Dean, and his wife Danneel Ackles is also board as a producer. In addition to Donnelly and Rodger, the show has already cast Nida Khurshid and Jojo Fleites as series regulars.

The Winchesters will be the first live-action spinoff officially ordered from the franchise, with the only other spinoff being an anime adaptation in 2010. Several other Supernatural spinoffs have been attempted throughout the years, including Supernatural: Bloodlines and Wayward Sisters, which had backdoor pilots on the main series but ultimately weren't picked up by the network. Not much more is known about The Winchesters, including a possible airdate or a number of episodes. However, there is a good chance it will be among the CW programs premiering this fall.
Supernatural is the longest-running live-action fantasy series in American history, and as a result, still has plenty of stories to tell in its layered world. The show's magnetic performances and self-aware tone have helped it develop one of the most passionate fanbases in television, a fanbase that hasn't had an outlet in the 18 months since the show left the air. Though only time will tell if The Winchesters can continue where Supernatural left off, the franchise's dedicated core fanbase will finally have another place to express their passion for The CW's dark fantasy opus.
