Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Pitch Meeting

Screen Rant's latest Pitch Meeting episode imagines how the idea for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' story was conceived. Marvel Studios' latest film brings back Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange as he ushers a brand new hero into the MCU in America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez). The pair teams up against Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) who embraces her Scarlet Witch destiny and has become a full-on villain.

Directed by Sam Raimi, who replaces originally helmer Scott Derrickson, with the story written by Loki's Michael Waldron, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dives deep into the concept of the multiverse. The idea to further explore alternate realities is intriguing as it allows Marvel Studios to imagine how the Sacred Timeline differs from an endless number of other universes. It also allows the franchise to bring in several high-profile actors for cameos without affecting the Sacred Timeline's continuity, like Patrick Stewart's Professor X and John Krasinski's Mister Fantastic.

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness now in its second week in theaters, Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting decides to finally tackle the MCU blockbuster. In the clip below, host Ryan George points out some of the ridiculous aspects of the sequel, including the film's controversial handling of Wanda's arc on the heels of WandaVision. He also cites Reed Richard's catastrophic mistake that resulted in Scarlet Witch easily killing Black Bolt (Anson Mount). Watch the full video below:

Despite its massive box office haul, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actually garnered mixed reviews from the public. Some praise its performances, particularly Olsen as she transforms from the miserable and alone Wanda into the frightening Scarlet Witch. Gomez's debut as America has also been heralded, leaving many excited to see what's next for her in the MCU. But, there are some glaring criticisms of the sequel as well. As exciting as the mid-credits scene is, not everyone is exactly impressed by it, especially since there is barely any set-up to Charlize Theron's Clea introduction. Overall, some have argued that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' core story may be too thin and that without the fun cameos, it may not have lived up to the hype.

After the Infinity Saga, Marvel Studios is getting bolder with its storytelling choices. While films like Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings take on the usual three-arc structure, Eternals moves away from that trend. WandaVision and Moon Knight on Disney+, on the other hand, take the time to really focus on their titular characters. That being said, Marvel Studios need to make sure that at the end of the day, their stories are solid. Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness highlights some narrative weaknesses in the film. Had they been fixed, the sequel would have benefitted.
