This Is Us: One Quote From Each Main Character That Goes Against Their Personality

The beloved drama series This Is Us is coming up on its final episode, leaving fans eager to see how the showrunners will choose to end it all.

Fans have had the opportunity to watch these amazing characters over the years of their lives, getting to know them on a personal level. However, they have occasionally said things that didn't quite go along with their personality. Some lines that didn't quite fit their established characterization were said in such a casual way or in a heated moment, so it can be hard to pick up on their unusual nature.

At first glance, this line may seem like the typical cheesy, heartfelt words of Randall Pearsons, but it seems a bit out of character when given some consideration.

While Randall admits to some flaws in his family and himself, he's often seen struggling with the fact that he can't make everything in his life perfect. In fact, going through the seasons, the only thing in Randall's life he's sure is perfect in his life is his family. So, though this line isn't often given a second thought, it's one that speaks against his proven beliefs.

Kate Pearson has had quite a few inspirational quotes throughout This Is Us, but she is far from the most confident character in the show.

Kate's character has been built over the years as someone very uncomfortable in her own mind and skin. She's often seen being frantic and speaking rashly when she feels the situation is out of her control. But she also grows a lot over the years. When she admits at her wedding that she knows not everything is going to go well, it's out of character because Kate finally understood she can't dwell on the little things and learned to go with the flow.

Kevin is seen in this series as a confident, successful, and attractive man from the very start. But the audience knows that he was covering up much of the struggles he was facing, from his guilt about his father's death to his alcoholism.

However, he was seen as far more cocky and conceited in his youth. That's why it's so surprising to see young Kevin saying this line. Though he had just ruined his marriage with Sophie, it still felt out of character considering he had tried to make excuses for his actions following the betrayal.

In this series, Beth is the number one cheerleader for her entire family. When she finds out Tess is gay and struggles to deal with this revelation, it felt out of character for her usual accepting personality.

Though learning something huge about a child is an adjustment for every parent, Beth's confusion with learning to deal with her daughter's sexuality was conflicting with the normal encouragement she always gave her children. Beth did learn to accept and understand who her daughter was, which felt more appropriate for her.

When Nicky first rejoined the Pearson family, he was quiet and unsure about how to be around people after living a hermit's life for so many years. The audience got to enjoy Nicky becoming more comfortable with his nephews, niece, and his brother's widow.

However, it wasn't until years after joining the family that he appeared to really find his voice. When Cassidy nearly kills herself in a car accident, fans get to see Nicky's character change. This line felt out of character because he wasn't used to dealing with other people and their problems before. Hearing him explain a veteran's PTSD to Kevin showed the audience that, though it was shocking to hear from him, he was more comfortable understanding friends and family.

Toby's character changed drastically from the beginning of this series to the end. At first, fans got to meet the fun, enthusiastic Toby that wanted to do whatever it took to make Kate happy.

After years that included a health scare, marriage, and kids, Toby's character became more serious. When Kate and Toby's relationship began to take a nosedive, he became a completely different person, often shocking the audience with some of the cruel and hurtful things he said. Katoby's breakup was one of the most devastating in This Is Us, but when words as cruel as this were shouted, it was clear the separation was for the best.

Sophie and Kevin are one of the best couples on This Is Us, with fans rooting for them to end up together right from her first appearance.

However, Sophie was never really confident in her relationship with Kevin following his affair early in their life. When they are seen connecting between their relationships, they often reminisced on what they had as kids. That's why it seems out of character that she was upset to hear Kevin remembering her when she was younger. Though the reaction was understandable, it was out of sorts considering their love was built over a lifetime.

When Randall picks Deja up from Boston after she lied to spend the weekend with her boyfriend Malik, they shared some heated words. In the heat of the moment, Deja said this line to Randall, seemingly disregarding all the love and support her parents had given her.

Though Deja was confused and often cruel when she was first fostered by the Pearsons, she later became a natural part of the family. Her retreating to her younger mindset was a shock and out of character for nearly adult Deja. However, the involvement of her relationship with Malik likely clouded her judgment and made her say things she didn't mean.

When Jack found out his good friend Miguel was divorcing his wife, he was upset about the situation and shared his opinion in this way.

It's clear Jack Pearson was all about love and commitment, but he was also someone that supported the people he cared about and always tried to understand what was best for them. Some would think that this harsh opinion of a divorce would be out of character considering he always wanted to make the people he cared for happy. Perhaps the reason he said this was because he had a good marriage (for the most part) and couldn't imagine going through the same situation.

When Rebecca finds out her daughter Kate is going to go through IVF to have a child of her own, she says this out of fear for her daughter's life. However, it seems to contradict her personality.

Rebecca was an exceptional mother and was often seen in the show emphasizing how happy she was being their mom. Instead of understanding her daughter's yearning to carry a child herself, she chooses to lash out and argue with Kate about this decision. A parent can understand her fear, but she's known for always encouraging her children to follow their dreams and go for what they want.
