Moon Knight's Alters Are Unleashed in the Battle for His Mind

Beginning this August, a new arc in Moon Knight will pit the Fist of Khonshu's alters against each other, causing a fight not only on the street but within his own mind. The tease for the new arc mentions all five key players: Moon Knight, Mr. Knight, Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley.

Moon Knight was created by Don Perlin and Doug Moench, first appearing in Werewolf By Night #32 in a story called "The Stalker called Moon Knight." He was originally the antagonist of the Werewolf but his popularity grew to the point that he started appearing in other titles before getting his own series. There have been several ongoing Moon Knight series over the years with a variety of writers and artists tackling the titular character. Previous creative teams have included Charlie Huston and David Finch, Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev, as well as Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood, among many other talented figures in the comic book industry. Recently starring in his own Disney+ show, Moon Knight is a unique character in that he has dissociative identity disorder (DID). His mental health representation is explored both in the comic and within the show, an important step forward in destigmatizing people with disorders such as DID, but not without its missteps in how the disorder has been portrayed over the years.

A teaser tweet from Marvel Entertainment hinted at the next mysterious arc in the Moon Knight series. Beginning with issue #14, there will be both a physical battle on the streets and a mental battle within Moon Knight's own mind taking place. This will pit all of his alters, from Moon Knight himself to Jake Lockley, in a fight. The current series, which will presumably be the same creative team for this upcoming story arc, is written by Jed MacKay, who also wrote Marvel's Black Cat series. He's joined by Mighty Morphin Power Rangers artist Alessandro Cappuccio and Ms. Marvel colorist Rachelle Rosenberg.

Several elements explored in this current series of Moon Knight should be taken into account for this upcoming arc. Currently, Marc is serving as the high priest of a congregation known as "the Midnight Mission," typically talking to clients as his Mr. Knight alter while fighting their problems as Moon Knight. He refers to the four aspects of the moon god Khonshu by new names, which also correlate with his alters: "the traveler," "the pathfinder," "the embrace," and "the defender of those who travel at night." Typically as Mr. Knight, he is required to attend sessions with a therapist, one of several outcomes resulting from his recent arc, "Age of Khonshu," taking place in the Avengers series. This saw Moon Knight become a godlike being who after saving the world tried to change it to reflect Egypt's image, leading to the Avengers having to imprison Khonshu.

All these elements will likely play a role in some way during this upcoming story as they continue to take part in the ever-evolving character development of the Moon Knight alters. But that remains to be seen until the fourteenth issue of Moon Knight kicks off the battle between his five multiple personalities: Moon Knight, Mr. Knight, Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley (quite a crowd). That issue will be available in comic book stores in August 2022.
