The Original Five X-Men Get Perfect New 'Titles' in Marvel's Universe

The original five X-Men are some of the most famous mutants in all of Marvel Comics, but their leader Cyclops recently honored his OG teammates Angel and Iceman by giving their abilities "titles" that are an integral part of Krakoan war strategy. Cyclops, who is the leader of the current X-Men team and also one of the Krakoan War Captains, clearly respects Bobby and Warren's history, experience, and legacy as long-time X-Men members.

Both Warren Worthington III, codenamed Angel, and Bobby Drake, codenamed Iceman, first debuted in 1963's X-Men #1, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. They were introduced as members of the first class of mutants Charles Xavier ever taught out of the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Iceman and Angel's peers were Jean Grey, Scott Summers, and Hank McCoy, who all joined together to form the first X-Men team, fighting against Magneto, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and other threats to both humanity and mutantkind. Both Warren and Bobby have remained incredibly popular and beloved X-Men characters and have each been on, and led, multiple X-Men teams. Angel, as his name suggests, is capable of flight with his stunning angelic wings, while Iceman is an Omega-level mutant capable of creating and harnessing the power of ice, and they are both often considered some of the most experienced and talented mutants around.

In the pages of Immortal X-Men #2 - written by Kieron Gillen with art by Lucas Werneck - the X-Men and Quiet Council are dealing with the External Gate Kaiju created by Selene, and a Data Page is shown written by Cyclops, who is a master strategist and tactician. The Data Page is titled "Summers Protocol: Delaying Kaiju" and emphasizes how immediate destruction of a Godzilla-level threat may not be possible, so distraction or diversion may be imperative. The Summers Protocol postulates that two reasonable ways to deter a Kaiju from destroying Krakoa would be to either create a blockade preventing it from moving forward, or leading it away by luring it from Krakoa, and Cyclops establishes that Bobby and Warren are perfect archetypes for these tactics.

Cyclops calls mutants capable of "luring" the Kaiju away from Krakoa "ANGELS," saying that in the appendix there is a "list of Krakoan citizens with applicable gift," going on to say that mutants who are able to conduct "barrier generation" are called "ICEMEN," who can be rotated out to delay the attack until a solution is decided upon. By naming these two types of mutants "ANGELS" and "ICEMEN" Scott Summers is not only honoring these two classic X-Men's legacies, but he is also firmly establishing that Angel and Iceman are the archetypes of each of their power sets, making it clear that new mutants born with similar abilities will be seen as "descendants" of these two original X-Men. Now that Krakoan culture is becoming more and more solidified and agreed upon, it is a huge honor for Angel and Icemen to be formally cemented in mutant history as the archetypes of two power types of abilities. It is moments like these that help to break the hard shell Cyclops often forms around his tactical mind, showing that he has a lot of love and respect for the mutants he grew up with.

Angel and Iceman are both mutant icons who have gone through intense personal upheaval, trauma, and growth over the past several decades, so it is really nice to seem them being uplifted during the Krakoan Era. While all mutants deserve love and admiration from their peers, it is especially sweet to see Cyclops so explicitly honoring Angel and Iceman, two of the five original X-Men, and inspirations for all of Krakoa.
