The Office: Michael & Holly’s Kids Make One Sad Detail Even Worse

While Michael revealing that he and Holly had kids made his story better, it also made one of the saddest details from The Office’s “Dinner Party” even worse. From the very beginning of The Office, Michael Scott was vocal about wanting to get married and have kids, even if that meant dating women who he didn’t actually like. For The Office's finale, Michael returned in a cameo to reveal that he and Holly got married, with NBC later confirming that they had four kids together.

The details of Michael’s past are often filled with embarrassing, pitiful, or sad moments, which go to prove the resilience of the character to still be so optimistic about his future. While burning his foot on a George Foreman grill and being given false hope about getting a Dunder Mifflin corporate job are examples of some of Michael’s lowest moments, they don’t compare to the emotional (and physical) tolls he suffered during his relationship with Jan Levinson. The truth of their tumultuous relationship was put into the spotlight for The Office’s season 4 episode, “Dinner Party,” which is largely regarded as one of the best episodes of the series, not least of all because it revealed numerous sad details about Michael’s life.

One of the most iconic jokes from The Office was derived from the scene in “Dinner Party” where Michael reveals that he has had three vasectomies on account of Jan’s indecision about having children. While Michael’s “snip snap, snip snap” comment is humorous, The Office’s character was clearly upset about the “physical toll that three vasectomies have on a person.” As difficult as three vasectomies were on Michael, the reveal in The Office’s finale that Michael had children of his own with his wife Holly Flax indicates a sad "Dinner Party" episode follow-up: he had to have another vasectomy procedure to have these children. While reversing the procedure allowed Michael to have the children he always dreamed of, it also means that Michael had a total of four vasectomy procedures before the end of The Office.

Michael has now twice had a vasectomy to keep him from having children and two to reverse it, which is a pretty brutal physical toll on The Office’s iconic character. However, as taxing as these procedures were on him physically, his fourth vasectomy was obviously still worth it because of how desperately he wanted to have a family, especially with Holly. When considering that the ability to have children is still much lower after having a vasectomy reversed, it’s surprising that The Office's Michael and Holly were able to have four so quickly, perhaps suggesting that they had gone through the adoption or fertility clinic route for at least one of their kids.

Although Michael’s “snip snap” line has become one of his most memorable quotes in The Office, the scene in “Dinner Party” is another occasion of how poorly he was treated by Jan, and how desperately he wanted her to be happy in their relationship. While Michael had these procedures done willingly, Jan knew that Michael had always wanted children, so her indecision causing him to have three vasectomies during their two-year-long relationship goes to show just how bizarre their romance was. Thankfully, Michael ended The Office with his perfect match in Holly, with his future wife being worth the physical toll of a fourth vasectomy procedure.
