Wicked's Glinda Actor Goes Blonde As Ariana Grande Preps For Musical

Ariana Grande has teased her transformation into Glinder for her role in Wicked, the upcoming two-part movie musical adaptation of the hit stage show. In 2003, the Wicked stage musical, based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, left theatre audiences and critics impressed. The story charts the unlikely friendship between contrasting witches of the Land of Oz, Elphaba and Glinda, as circumstances lead them to become mortal enemies, with each taking up the title of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch respectively. The Wicked musical won 6 Tony Awards out of 10 nominations and broke several production records while surpassing $1 billion in total Broadway revenue. Inspired by its astounding success, a film adaptation has long been discussed.

After several roadblocks and production delays, the Wicked movie finally began making headway in 2021 when John M. Chu stepped in as the new director in place of  Stephen Daldry, with the musical's creators Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman penning the screenplay. Later that year, Wicked cast Grande and Cynthia Erivo to play the lead roles of Glinda and Elphaba respectively. The progress delighted many, and the hype increased even more when Chu revealed that Grande's Wicked audition brought him to tears. Fans have since been anxiously waiting to get a look at Grande and Erivo's characters in the movie, and it seems that their wishes will be answered soon.

Recently, Grande posted a story to Instagram that revealed her new hairstyle for her role as Glinda in Wicked. As the snapshot showed, Grande has dyed her waist-length hair platinum blonde for the role, presumably as she begins preparations for filming the movie. In the picture, Grande had her hair tied up in her characteristic high pony, though for the movie, she will likely be wearing her down. Take a look at the picture of the pop star's new hairdo below.

It seems that Grande has already arrived in the U.K. to begin rehearsals for Wicked. She has been hinting at the start of production - a few days ago she posted an image of the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz to her story. Earlier, it was announced that the Wicked movie would begin filming this summer, and with Grande enthusiastically teasing her role as Glinda, it seems that production could indeed commence very soon. One additional interesting tidbit in Grande's story was that, in the picture, she posed alongside music producer/songwriters Ilya Salamanzadeh and Savan Kotecha. Salamanzadeh and Kotecha collaborated with Grande for her album Sweetener, and with the Wicked movie set to include a new song, it is possible that the trio might be working on a new track for the film.

Overall, Grande's new image helps tide fans over as they await more updates from Wicked. It's heartwarming to see that the singer-actress is fully committing to her role in Wicked, and she is ready to go an appreciable length to perfectly embody Glinda. With Grande showing off her new hair, fans should be on the lookout for similar updates from Erivo, as well as a potential glimpse at Glinda's layered ice-blue ballgown. Considering that the Wicked movie won't release until Christmas 2024, it might be a long wait before audiences learn more about the movie, though.
