One Underrated Green Arrow Weapon Can Take Out the Entire Justice League

One of Green Arrow's weapons is powerful enough to defeat almost the entire Justice League--and it's not a trick arrow. Oliver Queen, alias Green Arrow, has been one of DC Comics' key heroes ever since their days as National Allied Publications, created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp in 1941. Initially appearing in More Fun Comics #71 and best known for a popular 1970s revamp by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams in Green Lantern/Green Arrow, he has since featured in a variety of both solo and team books. Known as much for his deep left-wing convictions as for his Robin Hood-inspired persona and equipment, Green Arrow is regarded as one of the most developed characters of the DC Comics roster, with a large number of deep personal relationships and involvement in a number of fan-favorite story arcs.

Ollie, however, has his own method of taking down the Justice League, and it's not even technically a weapon. Oliver Queen is, in addition to being a wealthy businessman, diehard liberal, and master archer, is also something of a home cook, and one of his recipes has taken on a dangerous legacy. What should be a standard chili recipe is, in Oliver Queen's hands, a threat to almost the entire Justice League--with one exception. As first depicted in Green Lantern/Green Arrow #108 (written by Dennis O'Neil, art by Mike Grell and Bruce Patterson, colored by Adrienne Roy), and expanded upon in further appearances, "Brother Ollie's Ne Plus Ultra-Burn-Your-Guts-Out, Mouth-Blastin' Chili" is referred to by Black Canary as the "best paint remover [she's] ever eaten." From its first appearance alone, Green Arrow's chili is clearly too spicy for average human palates.

Of course, the chili's destructive potential wouldn't be fully unleashed until the 2002 Green Arrow Secret Files and Origins #1 segment "Chili Recipe" (written by Scott McCullar, pencils by Patrick Gleason, inks by Michael Bair, color by Tom McCraw,) which not only provided readers with the full recipe, but also depicted Ollie serving the League his chili--or more accurately, defeating them with it. Martian Manhunter contorts in pain, the fiery heat of the chili being too much for his Martian anatomy. Aquaman begs for water. Superman struggles to cool it down with his super breath. The Flash remarks that he now has "something to use against Captain Cold." Green Lantern complains that he lacks the willpower to eat it.

Clearly, the Justice League had met their match with what was referred to as "Ollie's Stupendous Chili Recipe (Just like Mom used to make!)." The only two Leaguers undefeated by it were Black Canary, who seems to have learned her lessons from past encounters; and of course, Batman, who smiles as he chews and blithely remarks that "it could use more crackers."

Although Ollie's chili, in whatever form it appears, is clearly not intended as a weapon, it also clearly has destructive capabilities that could make it a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands. Any supervillain looking to take down the League could learn a thing or two from Ollie, who managed to neutralize nearly the entire team in one go without even trying. It also belies the notion that Green Arrow doesn't have any superpowers, as he clearly has one: a superhuman tolerance for spice.
