Riverdale Season 6 Finale Synopsis: Major Stakes Ahead Of Final Episodes

The synopsis for the Riverdale season 6 finale teases that the stakes have never been higher for the titular small town. The long-running teen series, which originally premiered on The CW in 2017, is a gritty reimagining of the popular characters from Archie Comics. The show's main cast includes KJ Apa as Archie Andrews, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camila Mendes as Veronica Lodge, Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones, Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom, and Casey Cott as Kevin Keller.

A lot has changed on Riverdale during the six seasons it has been on the air, including a huge time jump, the appearance of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka reprising her title role from the spinoff series, and the new wrinkle that several of the main characters have begun to develop superpowers. It's likely difficult to sustain these over-the-top developments, but the writers of the series have consistently managed to one-up themselves. With Riverdale officially ending with the upcoming season 7, they now have even more license to completely throw caution to the wind and dive into every zany idea they have, pulling every plot thread to its farthest extent.

In keeping with this newfound narrative freedom, the show is already promising huge developments. Per ComicBook, the official synopsis for the Riverdale season 6 finale has been revealed. The episode, which is titled "Night of the Comet" and set to air on July 31, was co-written by the show's creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. According to the synopsis, Archie and his friends will soon be forced to face off against the "greatest threat" that Riverdale has ever seen. Check out the full synopsis below:

Archie and the gang band together to save Riverdale from the greatest threat the town has ever faced. KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Mädchen Amick, Casey Cott, Vanessa Morgan, Charles Melton, Erinn Westbrook and Drew Ray Tanner star. Gabriel Correa directed the episode written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa & Aaron Allen.

Anyone who has watched Riverdale knows that the seemingly idyllic town has been under major threat before. As the show's twists and turns deepened over the past five seasons, the characters have had to face off against everything from a widespread drug problem to serial killers and a killer cult. These heightened stakes will likely be coming from the supernatural threat posed by new villain Percival Pickens, and given the episode title's reference to the post-apocalyptic 1984 film Night of the Comet, things could start to look very bad for the town.

So far, there aren't any further details about the plot of the episode. This is likely due to the fact that the two episodes that precede the finale - "Return to Rivervale" and "The Stand" - have not aired yet, so the show's creators want to avoid spoilers until the penultimate episode has actually been seen. However, in the week leading up to the Riverdale season 6 finale, fans will be sure to get a much closer look at what exactly might be doing down in this climactic episode.
