MCU: 15 Characters Who Could Join The Guardians Of The Galaxy In The Sequel

A lot has happened after Avengers: Endgame, and while the next upcoming Marvel movies will show Earth's heroes are dealing with the repercussions, there haven't been many words from the Guardians in space. However, James Gunn has confirmed that the Guardians of the Galaxy will have one more movie before his story is complete.

The Guardians have been introduced to many Avengers during the events of Endgame, and it makes sense for other heroes to join their adventures. After all, nearly every Marvel film features multiple heroes nowadays. For example, Elizabeth Olsen is reprising her role as Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home. There have been Avengers that joined the Guardians in the comics, so it's only fair that their team gains some new members in the MCU as well.

Updated on July 21st, 2022 by Colin McCormick: After teasing the team-up at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder briefly explored the dynamic of Thor as a full-fledged member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Surprisingly, he seemed to mesh with the team quite well which suggests there are more characters who could join them in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. From some of the classic heroes to new established characters, these MCU heroes would make interesting new additions to the Guardians,

It seems that every time fans think Vision is dead, he finds some way to come back. In WandaVision, a new all-white version of the hero was introduced and while he was initially under the control of SWORD, White Vision seemed to find his own purpose by the end.

While it is unclear if and when fans will see White Vision again, he seems like he would be better suited to a cosmic setting than Earth. Having him join the Guardians would give the team a member who is intelligent and rational. It would also be fun seeing Drax communicating with such a being.

Shang-Chi is another exciting new character in the MCU who fans can't wait to see interact with some of the other characters. And while he is an Earth-based hero at the moment, the secret behind the ten rings could lead him into the cosmos.

Immediately, it would seem like Shang-Chi and Star-Lord would get along great. They are both easy-going and hilarious heroes with complicated relationships with their fathers, to say the least. With Shang-Chi being welcomed into the circus of the Marvel universe, he might as well jump in head-first with its strangest characters.

There are some great Hulk storylines from the comics that deal with the hero in space. Thor: Ragnarok explored this idea with him winding up on Sakaar and seeming to find his place among the band of misfits that live there. While he returned to Earth, it is possible he could link up with the Guardians after heading back into space.

The fun of seeing Hulk and Groot share the screen is an opportunity that cannot be passed up. Hulk also has that reckless and wild personality that seems to be a perfect fit for this particular team.

Though the future of the Eternals in the MCU is unclear, Kingo seems like one Phase 4 character with long-term potential. Out of the mostly brooding teams of ancient warriors, Kingo is the funniest and most entertaining with a very intriguing second career as a Bollywood star.

Kingo seems to have broken with his fellow Eternals somewhat so he may be looking for a new team. His comedic sensibilities and love of Earth culture would be ideal for the Guardians.

The end of WandaVision did indeed tease the fact that Monica Rambeau would be following in her mother's footsteps and heading into space. While fans already know that Monica will be appearing in The Marvels with her newly discovered superpowers, there is no reason she can't also hook up with the Guardians as well.

With Monica's military background, it would be funny to see her try to work with the motley crew of the Guardians. But her dreams of going into space would make her a charming addition to the cosmic team.

Captain Marvel hasn't interacted with the Guardians in the movies, but there are connections between Captain Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. It's evident that the Skrulls are becoming a major theme in Phase 4, with the possibility that some characters will be revealed as Skrulls in Secret Invasion.

In Captain Marvel, the Skrulls play a major role, but it wasn't their first appearance in the MCU. In an official prequel comic for GotG, the Skrulls made a brief appearance. While this connection seems minor on the surface, Captain Marvel has traveled to space and teamed up with the Guardians in the comics before. It wouldn't be far-fetched if Carol Danvers joined the Guardians and traveled to other planets, perhaps even visiting the Skrulls' new homeworld.

Fans already got a tease of what it would look like if Thor traveled with the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity War, and they have loved their interactions so much that the adventures continue in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor made a powerful member of the Guardians even if his arrogance sometimes got in the way of the mission. But the God of Thunder fit in surprisingly well with the band of cosmic misfits. Though he went off on his own journey and left them to their intergalactic fun, there's no stopping him from rejoining the gang in the next adventure.

Bucky Barnes had one of the most iconic scenes with Rocket Raccoon in Avengers: Infinity War, when Bucky lifted Rocket and the duo took down the Chitauri army together. His interactions with the Guardians end there, but fans loved the scene so much, it wouldn't be a surprise if they interact more in the future.

Bucky Barnes is clearly stepping away from his title as The Winter Soldier and seemingly becoming the White Wolf. With Sam Wilson becoming the new Captain America and his best friend Steve Rogers no longer around, it's easy for Bucky to get lost in the picture. Teaming up with the Guardians and heading to space could be an exciting change for him.

Spider-Man is typically one of Marvel's street-level heroes, but the MCU has been steering him in a new direction. Peter Parker's close relationship with Iron Man left an imprint on him. As such, when Peter traveled to Europe in Spider-Man: Far From Home, he even added new Stark technology to his suit.

Spider-Man has already visited space alongside Iron Man in Avengers: Infinity War, with the suit Tony Stark created. His first trip to space wasn't the best experience, but the loss of his former mentor has clearly inspired him. Peter likely wants to live up to Iron Man, and taking on a mission with the Guardians might be the way to do it.

Iron Man sadly passed away in Avengers: Endgame, making his appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy seem unlikely. However, the MCU is opening up new opportunities after the events of Loki and WandaVision. The MCU is becoming more like the comics and bringing the multiverse into its films.

In comics, it's unlikely for characters to stay dead and there's a chance fans will see Tony Stark from an alternate universe. Robert Downey Jr. insisted that he's done playing Iron Man, but he could be keeping things under wraps. Iron Man was a member of the Guardians in the comics, and the new multiverse might make that possible in the films.

The season finale of Loki left the God of Mischief in quite a predicament, trapped in an alternate universe with seemingly no escape. Still, Loki is certainly clever, and will most likely figure out a way home.

Loki's quest to return home might lead him to visit different planets, or even having to steal a spaceship. His attempt to escape the TVA could lead him to meet up with the Guardians of the Galaxy, who would already be familiar with him from the tales Thor told them in Avengers: Infinity War. After what Loki learned from Kang the Conquerer, it's likely he will want to restore the timeline, which could be the Guardian's next mission.

Though Jean Grey is not yet in the MCU, things could change after Ms. Marvel teased the existence of mutants. It has already been confirmed that Deadpool will join the MCU, so it's likely fans will see the X-Men appear as well.

Jean Grey is one of the most important members of the X-Men so it would make sense that she would be featured in the MCU. Along with the cosmic ties to her character, she was once part of the Guardians in the comics.

Ant-Man has spent most of his time on Earth, but Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania might change things. It's been confirmed that Kang the Conquerer, who fans first saw on Loki, will be the main villain of the film.

Kang was a highly intelligent scientist, who wished to conquer Earth and other planets. On Loki, it was revealed that after the collapse of the timeline, multiple Kangs would attempt to take over as many planets as possible. Ant-Mans first run-in with Kang will put the villain on his radar, perhaps leading him to join the Guardians and save other planets. In the comics, Ant-Man was a member of the Guardians for a short while, so it wouldn't be a surprise if he joined the team on screen.

Star-Lord and Gamora have a secure relationship, but Peter Quill's relationship with Gamora didn't last as long in the comics. Peter fell in love with Kitty from the X-Men after their team-up with the Guardians.

Their relationship led to Kitty joining the Guardians of the Galaxy and temporarily leaving the X-Men. Her role in the Guardians became pretty big, with her later taking over as Star-Lord when he left to be King of the Spartan Empire. Star-Lord and Gamora have fought in the past, maybe their next fight will occur when the X-Men become part of the MCU.

The Nova Corps has already been featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy as their allies. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thor revealed that Thanos destroyed the Nova Corps HQ in search of the power stone, killing every Nova in the process. While tragic, this gives Marvel Studios the perfect opportunity for Richard Rider's origin.

In the comics, Richard Rider is the last surviving Nova. The Guardians have a major connection to the Nova Corps, so if there's one Nova still alive, the third Guardians film would be the perfect introduction.
