Spawn's Female Counterpart Has An Absolutely Wild Real-World Origin

While Todd McFarlane’s Spawn is one of the most popular characters in the history of independent comics, he’s not the only Hellspawn in existence. Many have wielded the powers of Hell to fight against the forces of darkness in the Spawn Universe, like the various characters who have gone by the name She-Spawn.

Recently, the primary Spawn title and its offshoots have brought more Hellspawn into the fray in addition to main character Al Simmons. There’s Gunslinger Spawn, an old west outlaw avenging the death of his family. Also reappearing after a years-long absence is Medieval Spawn, a knight currently bonded to writer Marc Rosen. And then there is the current She-Spawn, who makes regular appearances in Spawn spinoff title The Scorched. However, the character’s history extends further back than that, beginning life in the most unexpected of places.

The first She-Spawn appeared as a part of Series 4 of the Spawn action figure line from McFarlane Toys. This unexplained character never appeared in any previous comic or other media. The only information about her comes from the figure’s bio on the back of her blister card, which simply states she’s a “talented tracker and warrior” who “spends all her time hunting.” This iteration got an updated figure in the Spawn Reborn line of action figures, but never appeared in any other Spawn Universe media. The first character to use the name in the comics was Nyx, who debuted in Spawn #122. A Wiccan who often helped Al Simmons with her magic, Nyx would later steal some of Simmons’ energy to rescue the soul of a friend trapped in Hell. This gave Nyx  her own Hellspawn powers, effectively making her the first official She-Spawn in the comics.

Nyx isn’t the She-Spawn currently appearing in the Spawn titles, however. That would be Jessica Priest, who has her own unlikely origins. Initially in the Spawn lore, the assassin who killed Al Simmons and sent him to Hell was Chapel, a member of Rob Liefeld’s team series Youngblood. When the 1997 film adaptation of Spawn began production, the producers were unable to secure the rights to Liefeld’s character. Instead, they created the character of Jessica Priest to fill the role, a psychotic assassin portrayed by actress Melinda Clarke. Priest would subsequently be introduced in the Spawn comic and retconned as Simmons’ true killer.

After getting her own story in the spin-off title Curse of the Spawn, Priest vanished from the comics for the next few decades, until she made her reappearance in 2019. Having befriended Nyx in the ensuing years, Priest is shocked to discover her body in Spawn #300. When she tries using Nyx’s magic to resurrect her, Priest winds up getting a Spawn costume and powers of her own, becoming the newest incarnation of She-Spawn. She subsequently works with Al Simmons in trying to uncover who murdered Nyx, with Simmons apparently putting their tumultuous history behind them. This She-Spawn now headlines the Spawn team book The Scorched, tracking down several time-displaced Hellspawn to battle threats too big for each of them to handle on their own.

It was a long, roundabout way to get there, but She-Spawn eventually found her way into the Spawn comics, becoming a major player in Todd McFarlane’s universe of characters.
