The Boys' ORIGINAL Soldier Boy Foreshadowed His Replacement's Death

Warning! Spoilers for The Boys comic book and television series below!

The original Soldier Boy in The Boys' universe's own death ended up foreshadowing the future demise of the future replacement version of the Supe, as both heroes died in a similar manner, despite decades between their dark endings. In The Boys comic book series, the original Soldier Boy led the Avenging Squad to their collective deaths, miscalculation the risk they faced. Meanwhile, the future Soldier Boy did the same thing with Payback against The Boys.

In The Boys, Soldier Boy is actually a legacy hero, as the original Supe fought in World War II against the Germans, leading the Avenging Squad during the time of war. However, his eventual replacement turned out to be one of the series' biggest jokes, as the future version of Soldier Boy was best known for pissing his pants, getting manipulated by Homelander, and leading the Payback team to their deaths. In The Boys television series, Soldier Boy, played by Jensen Ackles, was made to be one of the most powerful Supes ever, even on Homelander's level - but in the comics, both versions' powers align more with the character they parody, Captain America.

Despite the two Soldier Boys being quite different in terms of personality and respect among their fellow heroes, both died in a similar manner. In The Boys #53 by Garth Ennis, John McCrea, Darick Robertson, Keith Burns, Simon Bowland, and Tony Avina, Hughie learns about the Avenging Squad in a conversation with Greg Mallory. In a flashback, leaders meet the first Compound V-created team, led by the original Soldier Boy. However, after accidentally alerting the Germans of their hideout, the Avenging Squad is brutally killed, including Soldier Boy, whose guts pour out of his body as he's cut in half.

Soldier Boy's future replacement didn't fare much better, as the original Supe's death foreshadowed the cowardice hero's demise. In The Boys #33, Soldier Boy leads the Payback team into battle against The Boys as he hopes to prove the squad is worthy of being the ultimate superteam. However, Butcher mercilessly kills the Supes before torturing Soldier Boy, as, like the hero whose mantle he took on, the Supe inadvertedly leads his team to their violent deaths. He is later tortured and killed by Butcher.

Both the original Soldier Boy and his legacy replacement ended up dying in a horrific fashion, as both led their superteams to be brutally killed in missions where they tried to prove themselves. The old Soldier Boy's death foreshadowed the future version's demise, as both had bloody ends with their teams and failed to show they deserved bigger spotlights in The Boys' universe.
