The MCU's Next Mutant Character May Arrive Sooner Than You Think

The new She-Hulk trailer hints that the MCU’s second mutant is right around the corner. In the absence of any concrete plans for an X-Men movie, there’s been a sense that it could be years before Marvel takes its next step toward introducing the X-Men. However, it may not be long at all before the next mutant arrives in the MCU.

The MCU delivered a big shock when it unveiled its first mutant in Phase 4. The Ms. Marvel finale confirmed that none other than Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan is the MCU’s first mutant hero. Obviously, she’s just the first of many. What’s not clear, though, is how long it will take for more to show up. After all, the MCU’s only confirmed mutant-centric project is Deadpool 3, and there’s still no word on when it will release. As a result, how Marvel plans to continue its mutant setup is a major MCU mystery and one that could potentially take years to unfold.

Interestingly, the new She-Hulk trailer is a sign that Marvel will immediately transition into its next mutant character. The 2:27 mark in the She-Hulk trailer features two characters, with the one on the left bearing a striking resemblance to El Aguila, who is a mutant in Marvel Comics. The eagle emblem on his outfit, the red-navy-and-yellow color scheme, the red sash around his waist, and the mustache all point toward this character being a live-action take on El Aguila. And given how the trailer highlights the rising number of super-powered individuals, the MCU’s Aguila has a very good chance of keeping his mutant origin when he makes his debut in She-Hulk.

El Aguila’s role in Marvel Comics sheds light on what to expect from the MCU’s interpretation of his character in Disney+’s She-Hulk show. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Alejandro Montoya was a recurring character in the stories of Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Seeing himself as a modern-day freedom fighter who represented the poor and oppressed, Montoya fought crime as the swashbuckling superhero El Aguila and became Marvel’s answer to Zorro. In addition to his sword-fighting skills, Aguila boasted a secret mutant ability. He had the power to project electrostatic blasts which he would fire from his sword.

Though a mutant hero in the style of Zorro would certainly be an unexpected addition to MCU Phase 4, El Aguila is actually a perfect fit for the tone Marvel seems to be going for with the upcoming series. As a hero known for his grandiose way of speaking and his flair for the dramatic, El Aguila is a purposefully silly character who has a lot to offer an MCU comedy like She-Hulk. And if the show keeps his mutant abilities, the MCU can start to make mutants a more common occurrence ahead of the X-Men’s official introduction.
