A new The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power trailer was screened at San Diego Comic-Con, teasing some of what is to come in Amazon's highly-anticipated series. Marking the third major adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's beloved fantasy books after Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, The Rings of Power is set to explore the Second Age of Middle-earth's vast history. The series is expected to follow both new characters and younger versions of returning characters as they reckon with the emergence of a new evil in Middle-earth.
Trailers for The Rings of Power have shown off some of what is in store for viewers when the show premieres in September, including a closer look at many of the show's characters, battles, and beautiful locations. The footage has teased all of the major races in the show, including Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, and Men, and has also heavily featured Morfydd Clarke's younger Galadriel, with the character seemingly playing a crucial role in the events of the series. With Amazon's Lord of the Rings show now only about a month away, many fans are eager to get their hands on more footage from the show.
Now, released as part of the show's SDCC panel, fans can get an even closer look at The Rings of Power in the form of a brand new trailer, with the footage teasing a triumphant return to the beloved world of The Lord of the Rings. The new trailer is about 3 minutes in length and shows off more characters and battles than any previous teaser, including a first look at Anson Boon as Sauron and the return of the fearsome Balrog. While many viewers will be familiar with the towering Sauron first seen in Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, the version seen in The Rings of Power is very different and more human-like. The character's face is never shown in Jackson's films but, as was written in Tolkien's novels, Sauron began life as a Maia, essentially an angelic being who is later corrupted by Morgoth. The trailer doesn't reveal too much of what Sauron is up to during the Second Age of Middle-earth, but his brief appearance hints that he will rise to be a major force of antagonism for Galadriel and the other heroes.
After not being seen since The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the return of the balrog is sure to please many fans of Jackson's trilogy. Despite the return of a number of characters, settings, and themes, however, the latest trailer also shows off just how different The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be from anything that came before it. Hopefully, when the show's first episode releases in early September, it will manage to please both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
