With the return of Westworld for its long-awaited fourth season, fans are instantly becoming hooked once again to the sci-fi story. But while the compelling mystery is certainly a draw, it is the characters of Westworld that really bring this ambitious story to life.
While everyone certainly will have their own personal favorites, Ranker has shared the most popular Westworld characters among fans. Some characters are easy to root for, some are more complex, and many of them have their own intriguing mysteries fans love exploring.
10 Felix Lutz
It seems that the people working at Westworld fall into one of two categories, either being indifferent and cruel to the hosts or showing empathy for these creations. Felix falls into the latter category, making him a likable part of the team.
His true compassion shows when Maeve recruits him to help her escape from the park. While Felix is a timid man, he seems to be inspired by Maeve's boldness and strength which pushes him to follow her in her quest, making for an unexpected friendship between them.
9 Teddy Flood
Within the Western storytelling of the park, Teddy Flood serves as the archetypal cowboy hero. He is a brave and chivalrous host whose main storyline often involves saving the woman he loves, Dolores.
However, Teddy is also someone who is used by nearly everyone around him. It is especially heartbreaking when Dolores reprograms him to get rid of his kinder personality which she sees as weak. This leads to Teddy killing himself and cementing himself as one of the show's most tragic characters.
8 Elsie Hughes
Westworld is filled with plenty of serious characters so it is refreshing to have a character like Elsie around who offers a bit of comedic relief. She is one of the park's programmers and an assistant to Bernard, only to discover that he is actually a host.
The relationship between Elsie and Bernard is really entertaining, especially after she learns the truth about him. His stoic personality mixed with her dark and sarcastic sense of humor is a lot of fun. And given how entertaining Elsie is, it was a devastating blow to see her killed off.
7 Ashley Stubbs
During the first season of the show, Ashley Stubbs seems to be one of the least interesting characters. He is the park's security officer whose only personality trait is being a tough guy. But he is made a lot more likable in later seasons with the revelation that he is a host.
Unlike the other hosts, Stubbs is fully aware of what he is and doesn't care at all about his freedom. With so many mysteries in the show, it is nice to see a character who doesn't really care about any of the bigger questions. He also delivers some of the best action sequences in the series.
6 Lee Sizemore
Lee Sizemore is another character who is not easy to like in the first season. He is the park's arrogant storyteller who sees himself as some creative genius who is rude and dismissive to everyone else.
But when the chaos of season 2 begins, it is a lot of fun having a character as blunt and loudmouthed as Lee. He suddenly becomes one of the funniest characters to the point that his pompous attitude becomes charming. He also gets one of the best death scenes in the series.
5 Dolores Abernathy
Despite the large cast of Westworld, Dolores Abernathy has always felt like the show's closest thing to a main character. But with the wild journey she has been through over several seasons, she has also become a very complex character who is not always easy to cheer for.
Dolores endures so many horrors as a host in the park. But while that fuels her actions in a way that is somewhat understandable, she also becomes a crueler character over time, mistreating innocent characters like Teddy. But in the end, she is still a fascinating character and it will be interesting to see where her journey takes her next.
4 Bernard Lowe
Bernard Lowe is introduced as one of the park's main programmers in the first season. But in perhaps the most shocking twist on Westworld, he is revealed to be a host himself. This begins a new journey for Bernard which continues to highlight him as a compelling character in the story.
He is unwillingly made to do some terrible things, but Bernard seems to be a gentle and kind host underneath it all. While he searches for answers as well, he is not as destructive as some of the other hosts who are driven by revenge.
3 Maeve Millay
Almost immediately in the series, Maeve cements herself as Westworld's most badass character and is responsible for several iconic moments. Even as a host in the park, she has a confident personality and is extremely intelligent. So it is not surprising that she is one of the first hosts to begin to question things.
Seeing Maeve put the pieces of her world together, formulate a plan, and take control is so thrilling to watch. But she also has a protective nature to her and shows empathy for others, even above herself.
2 Robert Ford
Oscar-winning acting legend Anthony Hopkins only appeared in the first season of Westworld but made a massive impact as Robert Ford, the park's designer. Ford is a darker version of John Hammond from the Jurassic Park series and a puppet master working behind the scenes.
Hopkins's performance is a big reason Ford is such a compelling character, but it is also interesting to see the different aspects of his personality. He can seem indifferent to the hosts at one moment and prefer them to humanity in the next moment. In many ways, he is the character to get the story really moving.
1 The Man In Black
From the very beginning of the series, The Man in Black aka William has been Westworld's greatest villain. And like many other shows, the villain can sometimes be the most interesting character.
Williams's obsession and hatred for the park is a fascinating thing to explore as he lives out his dark fantasies over the years. It is also thrilling to see him begin to grapple with his own reality and question his existence. He is another character who has gone through a wild journey thus far and it is hard to predict where his story will go from here.
