They/Them: Everything We Know About Kevin Bacon's New Horror Movie

Content Warning: This article discusses homophobia and conversion therapy.

Here is everything we know about the upcoming Peacock horror They/Them so far, including story updates, the cast, and the release date, with the trailer having released in July 2022. Horror production company Blumhouse has already had an exciting year so far with releases such as The Black Phone and Firestarter, and They/Them is their next highly anticipated release. Starring Kevin Bacon as Owen Whistler, the film promises to be a bold LGBTQ+ slasher-horror flick.

They/Them will follow Owen Whistler, who is in charge of Whistler Camp, an LGBTQ+ conversion therapy camp for teenagers. The program is designed to last for one week, with many of the teens in attendance skeptical about the methods used. However, as the week progresses, the other camp employees slowly become more unhinged with their methods becoming more psychologically unsettling. Finally, as the campers find safety in one another, a mysterious killer in a terrifying mask begins claiming victims at the camp, forcing them to unite against the threat.

Unlike many other films in the slasher genre, They/Them is expected to subvert audience expectations by highlighting important societal issues. Of course, the film will critique the hateful methods of conversion therapy, but it will primarily celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Speaking to People, director John Logan (writer of Ridley Scott's Gladiator) stated that he wanted to create characters he never saw growing up and that he hopes when people watch the film that they "remember the incredible love these kids have for each other and how that love needs to be protected and celebrated."

Kevin Bacon will play Owen Whistler, with Carrie Preston (The Good Wife) set to play his wife, Cora. In addition to this, They/Them stars Anna Chlumsky, best known for her roles in My Girl and Inventing Anna, as a medic recently hired at the camp. Joining her will be Theo Germaine (The Politician) as Jordan, who is nonbinary and is expected to be a lead character who seeks liberation from the camp but is sent on a dark path when investigating the camp's past. They/Them also has numerous other recognizable actors to star in Kevin Bacons' return to horror, such as Quei Tran (Dear White People), Monique Kim (What/If), Cooper Koch (Swallowed), Darwin Del Fabro (Dangerous Liaisons), Anna Lore (Doom Patrol), and Austin Crute (Booksmart).

They/Them is expected to be released onto the streaming platform Peacock on August 5, 2022. This wouldn't be the first time a Blumhouse production has been released directly onto Peacock, with Halloween Kills debuting on the platform at the same time as its theatre release to avoid box office failure. Peacock is also home to a variety of great horror films, such as other Kevin Bacon horror, Tremors, and Blumhouse royalty, Sinister. While there's no news on a UK release date, British audiences can stream Peacock films and TV shows if they are Sky or Now TV customers.

The trailer for Peacock original They/Them is a great preview of the type of story director John Logan wants to tell. Audiences get their first glimpse at the antagonistic camp director Kevin Bacon and his unsettling wife, who, despite their initial light-hearted jokes, reveal themselves to be far more horrific under the surface. Straight away, the trailer highlights how abhorrent conversion therapy is, building a lot of its suspense through the psychological breakdown of the teens. While the killer only appears on screen for a few seconds, the sinister design is enough to provide a terrifying glimpse of the horrors that audiences can expect from They/Them this August 5th.
