Warning: Contains spoilers for Keep Breathing season 1
Although Keep Breathing season 1 seems to wrap up its story pretty well, the Netflix survival thriller could still receive a second season - and here's everything we know about Keep Breathing 2. Keep Breathing is a tense new survival drama from Netflix. Keep Breathing tells the story of Liv, a harried lawyer with a dark past whose attempts to reach out to her estranged mother lead her to board a small passenger plane bound for Inuvik.
When the plane crashes, Liv is forced to fend for herself and survive despite the odds in the harsh wilderness. Keep Breathing puts its heroine, Scream 2022 star Melissa Barrera, through the wringer as Liv endures hallucinations, injuries, dehydration, starvation, and psychological trauma throughout her long trek to civilization. Keep Breathing does give Liv a happy ending, but this doesn't mean there won’t be a second season of the series.
At the end of Keep Breathing season 1, Liv is resuscitated and rescued by a pair of fishermen after she falls into a river. Although her circumstances seem dire, in the closing moments of season 1, Keep Breathing intercuts Liv receiving CPR with scenes of her giving birth to her love interest Danny’s child. This montage heavily implies that Liv not only survived her ordeal but went on to make a full recovery, reunited with Danny, and had a happy life with her new partner.
Keep Breathing’s ending seems fairly definitive. However, the Netflix hit 365 Days: This Day seemingly killed off its heroine, but that didn’t stop the successful series from reviving the character in the movie’s next sequel. Ultimately, the success or failure of Keep Breathing with streaming audiences will decide whether or not the show gets a second season, as critics have already reacted with lukewarm praise for Barrera’s performance while also airing criticisms of Keep Breathing's thin plotting.
While Keep Breathing season 1’s ending finishes Liv’s self-contained story perfectly, in doing so, the series leaves the door open for a season 2 that focuses on another, new protagonist. Liv successfully surviving the wilderness frees Keep Breathing season 2 to follow a new lead character who ends up in similarly dire straits. The infamously gruesome un-adapted Stephen King story "Survivor Type" could provide inspiration for Keep Breathing season 2 since that tale of a surgeon stranded on a desert island recollecting his past has essentially the same setup as Keep Breathing season 1.
Not many of Keep Breathing’s season 1 cast could feasibly return to their season 1 role in a second season of the series. The pilot and only other passenger on Liv’s plane both perished early, while Liv’s father died in a flashback. While Melissa Barrera’s Liv, Jeff Wilbusch’s Danny, and Florence Lozano’s Lucia (Liv’s mother) all survive, there is not much more to their story, and a season 2 return may not work plot-wise. However, if Keep Breathing became an anthology-style series where every season follows a new survivor through impossible odds, the Netflix show could repeat the American Horror Stories ploy of casting the same actors in new roles every year.
Assuming that the self-contained nature of Keep Breathing season 1’s story doesn’t deter the creators from pursuing a second season, the Netflix hit could return soon. However, if Keep Breathing season 2 were to bring back the same cast, this could result in a slight delay. After all, star Barrera is currently filming Scream 6, meaning Keep Breathing season 2 couldn’t arrive until at least April 2023 to ensure the actor can fit it into her schedule.
