Doctor Strange Director Answers Avengers: Secret Wars Return Question

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson responds to a fan question regarding his potential return for Avengers: Secret Wars. Released in 2016 as part of MCU Phase 3, Doctor Strange introduced audiences to Benedict Cumberbatch's eponymous sorcerer. The film was a hit both critically and commercially and Doctor Strange would go on to appear in a number of other MCU movies, including most recently Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Derrickson was initially attached to director the Doctor Strange sequel, but he eventually exited the film, citing creative differences.

As part of San Diego Comic-Con this past week, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige unveiled the plan for the MCU's Phases 5 and 6. While the next few years will see the release of a number of intriguing Marvel movies, the announcement that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars will release in 2025 was particularly exciting for many fans. Little is known about the two projects, but it was recently announced that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Destin Daniel Cretton would direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The director for Avengers: Secret Wars, however, remains a mystery.

After a question from a fan on Twitter, Derrickson has offered a very definitive response regarding whether he could be the one to helm the highly-anticipated Avengers film, saying simply, "no" via a gif of Rorschach in Watchmen. The question specifically asked if there was "any possibility" that Derrickson could be the one to direct Avengers: Secret Wars and the director's response suggests that there isn't even a small chance that he would take on the job. Whether that's because he doesn't feel like he would be a good fit for the project or because of some other reason, however, is unclear. Check out Derrickson's tweet below:

Derrickson has previously commented on his exit from the Doctor Strange sequel, saying that the departure was entirely amicable and that he would gladly work with Marvel again. It's not entirely clear, then, why he is so assuredly shutting down the idea of directing Avengers: Secret Wars. Derrickson, who also directed last month's The Black Phone, is well-known for his work in the horror genre and it's possible that he just believes his style and his vision wouldn't be a good fit for a movie that is already being billed as one of the most significant MCU movies to date.

While Derrickson is definitely not involved with Avengers: Secret Wars, the director could always return for another MCU project somewhere down the line. With Phase 6 of the MCU and "The Multiverse Saga" seemingly set to conclude in 2025, however, it doesn't seem like Derrickson would even have time to return, with the Doctor Strange director having three new films in development, according to his IMDb page. With Derrickson confirmed to be out of the running, it remains to be seen who will end up helming the highly-anticipated Avengers: Secret Wars.
