Tom Hiddleston offers an update on the progress of Loki season 2. Hiddleston has played Loki in the MCU since 2011's Thor and would go on to be the main villain of The Avengers in 2012. But the character has seen significant change over the course of his MCU run and by the end of the third Thor film, Loki is practically a full-fledged hero. However, his past manipulations come back to haunt him when Thanos (Josh Brolin) kills him in the opening scene of Avengers: Infinity War.
Loki’s story does not end there, however, as Hiddleston returns to the role for a brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame that leads into a whole Disney+ series following the God of Mischief: Loki. Loki introduces the concept of Variants – different versions of the same individual from alternate universes and timelines – to the MCU. Thus, Loki’s story continues when a Variant of his is charged with crimes against the MCU’s ‘Sacred Timeline’ by the Time Variance Authority (TVA). The TVA shows Loki everything that happens in his life leading up to his death at the hands of Thanos. Therefore, Loki’s Variant can carry on the story of the MCU’s original Loki going forward.
Loki is the first live-action Disney+ MCU series to already have a season 2 confirmed. Hiddleston is returning to play the title character and speaks with The Playlist about updates surrounding when season 2 will start to film. See Hiddleston’s comments below.
“Absolutely. We’re in it already. I mean, we’re not filming, but we’re in prep, but we start in like six weeks or something. So, we’re in full steam ahead in terms of a script and story and it’s really exciting. Yeah, I can’t say too much, but lots of questions to be answered.”
His estimate of six weeks means that Loki season 2 could begin filming by June. While recent updates from the Loki team claim the series was not planned to be more than a single season, the season 1 finale leaves lots of lingering questions that should make for an exciting season 2. Plus, Loki can now continue connecting to the wider MCU as the Multiverse continues to expand.
Loki’s MCU future is loaded with possibilities since the character is so closely tied to the TVA and the Multiverse. It doesn’t seem out of the question for Loki to pop up in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness to help Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) learn more about the Multiverse. Thor: Love And Thunder also comes out soon. Loki doesn’t need to be in Thor 4, but if he is left out of the film, then it will be the first film in the Thor franchise that Loki isn’t a part of. Jonathan Majors, who stars in Loki as He Who Remains, is also confirmed to be playing Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania. With Loki being so closely tied to He Who Remains as well, perhaps he will have a role to play in Ant-Man 3. All speculation aside, Hiddleston will soon be back as Loki when Loki season 2 starts filming soon.
