Sonic The Hedgehog Star Leaves Sonic Toy At Airport to Travel with Fans

Sonic the Hedgehog star Ben Schwartz has left a Sonic plush toy at the airport in the hopes it goes on a global adventure with fans. Released in 2020, the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie was a hit, earning over $319 million worldwide. Although proving more divisive among critics, the success of Sonic the Hedgehog led to a sequel getting the green light.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was released in theaters last week, has also been a hit, earning over $71 million in its opening weekend domestically. The film sees the return of Schwartz as the voice of Sonic and also brings back Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduces several highly anticipated characters from the video game, including Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba, and Tails, voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey.

In a recent tweet, Schwartz provides Sonic the Hedgehog fans a way to participate in a fun, globetrotting adventure. The actor left a stuffed Sonic the Hedgehog at Gate 28 in LAX with written instructions for the finder to bring the toy with them on their next adventure before handing him off to another traveler. Schwartz encourages those who participate to write the names of the cities Sonic travels to on the toy's feet and also to take pictures in various places around the world. Schwartz later replies to his tweet and confirms that someone has indeed taken the toy from where he left it. Schwartz clearly hopes that the Sonic the Hedgehog toy ended up with "a fellow adventurer," but jokes that it could have just as easily been taken by "a worker who threw him in the trash." There have been no updates just yet regarding who might have taken the toy, but Schwartz encourages whoever it was to take a picture of themselves with Sonic using the hashtag #TravelSonic.

Considering the tight security at airports and the enhanced cleaning measures in place due to COVID-19, it's entirely possible that Schwartz's prediction is right and that the toy was removed by a sanitation worker or member of LAX's staff. Hopefully, however, the Sonic the Hedgehog toy ended up in the hands of somebody who will follow Schwartz's wishes and bring the toy on a global adventure. Clearly, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has struck a chord with many around the world and Schwartz's #TravelSonic game has the potential to be a fun and creative way for fans to engage with a beloved franchise. For now, however, it looks like Sonic the Hedgehog fans will have to keep their eyes peeled on the #TravelSonic hashtag to find out what became of Schwartz's Sonic toy.
