Sonic 2 Turns Master Emerald Into Infinity Gauntlet: How Powerful Is It?

Warning: SPOILERS For Sonic The Hedgehog 2!

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 adapts the Master Emerald into an Infinity Gauntlet-level power source, raising new questions about how powerful it is. Sonic The Hedgehog 2's opening weekend success has already solidified the blue hedgehog's future on the big screen. With his friends Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba) making their big-screen debuts, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 sends its quippy hero on a much bigger-scale adventure than in the original Sonic The Hedgehog.

In Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns to Earth in pursuit of the Master Emerald. Tricking the Enchinda warrior Knuckles to his side, Robotnik manages to get his hands on the ancient relic. Robotnik wields the Master Emerald's power to form his towering mechanized robot to conquer the world, leaving it up to Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails to stop him.

During the final battle, Sonic gets the Master Emerald back, only for it to fall apart into a collection of multi-colored diamonds. Just as Robotnik is about to crush Sonic, Tom (James Marsden), and (Tika Sumpter) under the robot's giant foot, the diamonds reform and massively upgrade Sonic to Super Sonic. With his newfound powers, Sonic uses them to defeat Robotnik, and the inspiration behind this take on the Master Emerald is clearly the Infinity Gauntlet as seen in the MCU, specifically, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. In the Sonic games, the Master Emerald is a colossally powerful artifact, wielding the power of Chaos Energy. Under the user's control, the Master Emerald's power is almost limitless, able to defy the limits of space and time as a true Deus Ex Machina. Carrey's Riddler-reminiscent Robotnik alludes to its vast power, stating his intent to use his robot and the Master Emerald's powers to conquer the universe, followed by the multiverse.

The Master Emerald's power level isn't far off from that of the combined might of the Infinity Stones. In bringing all six stones together, Thanos (Josh Brolin) is able to eliminate half of all life in the universe with the "snap" in Infinity War. In Endgame, the Avengers retrieve the stones from earlier points in history in the time heist, with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) using them to restore the life Thanos wiped out. In the final battle of Endgame, Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark performs his own snap, at the cost of his own life, to wipe out Thanos and his army for good.

Sonic only has the power of the Master Emerald relatively briefly at the end of the movie, using it to stop Robotnik's rampage. After his victory, Sonic only uses the power of the Master Emerald to conjure a chili dog from the sky, followed by a second one that drops right onto Knuckles head. Sonic then relinquishes the power of the Master Emerald, heeding Tom's advice that he's "still a kid" and has more growing up to do. With how briefly Sonic uses the power of the Master Emerald as Super Sonic, the full extent of its powers isn't shown in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Still, Sonic and company continue to guard the Master Emerald at the end of the movie. With Shadow the Hedgehog teased in the movie's end-credits scene, audiences might see the full extent of the Master Emerald's powers in the near future. At the very least, Sonic The Hedgehog 2's Infinity Gauntlet-esque Master Emerald harnesses the powers of several gems within and might be even more powerful than in the games. If nothing else, Sonic can always summon a chili dog at a moment's notice with it.
