At long last, CD Projekt Red has announced a 2023 release window for its eagerly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 expansion. For many months, the development studio maintained silence about its paid DLC plans for Cyberpunk 2077. The team recently offered somewhat of an update, though, informing players that despite news of the next Witcher game moving to Unreal Engine 5, all of the sci-fi RPG's content, including DLC, will remain tethered to the proprietary REDengine technology.
CD Projekt Red began teasing Cyberpunk 2077 DLC months ahead of the title actually hitting store shelves in December 2020. Such teases hinted the post-launch content support would resemble that of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, complete with free DLC and paid story expansions. Notably, a number of freebies entered the mix earlier this year, thanks to the 1.5 update unlocking access to new apartments, additional customization options, and extra side missions in Cyberpunk 2077. As of now, however, details regarding the long-awaited expansion remain scant at best. And it seems as though CDPR will keep the specifics under lock and key for a little while longer.
Following a financial call wherein CD Projekt Red outlined its production plans for 2022, the official Cyberpunk 2077 account followed up with a post noting that the long-awaited story DLC will launch in 2023. Details about the expansion, including its content and a firm due date, presently remain unknown to the public. More information concerning Cyberpunk 2077's future content release should go live later this year, though. The Twitter post in question reads as follows:
Thus far, the response from fans seems tepid at best, with some willing to wait for a quality product while others question the length of time between the main game's and expansion's respective releases. That this news comes on the heels of an indefinite delay to The Witcher 3's next-gen update ruffled a few feathers, as well. All in all, however, most would likely agree that CD Projekt Red taking its time on both projects is for the best, especially after Cyberpunk 2077's troubled launch nearly two years ago.
Fan theories about what the expansion will entail have inundated the web for quite some time. A fair few posit that CD Projekt Red will expand upon one of Cyberpunk 2077's multiple endings. Others believe Jackie Welles' story could use deeper exploration. Whatever the case may be, it's clear that many remain eager to go on one more adventure through the neon-lit streets of Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
