Why Thor: Love & Thunder's Trailer Uses A Guns N' Roses Song

After much anticipation, Marvel has finally released the first teaser trailer for Thor: Love & Thunder, and the Guns N' Roses song chosen to accompany it fits the hero's newest journey perfectly. Thor is unique among the current MCU lineup, as he was introduced alongside Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and many other Phase 1 heroes, whose numbers are dwindling following the conclusion of the Infinity Saga. Thor has prevailed and only grown in popularity, now becoming the first Marvel Studios hero to lead four different standalone films.

The Thor: Love & Thunder trailer shows that the strongest Avengers' upcoming adventure will be his most personal to date. After the death of his parents, brother, sister, the Warriors Three, Heimdall, and the events of the snap, Thor has come to rethink who he is. The depression and weight gain he faced in Avengers: Endgame, being dubbed 'Fat Thor,' due to the guilt he felt at not killing Thanos, haunted him for a time, but he seems to have found new motivation and purpose in Love & Thunder.

Taika Waititi returns to direct his second MCU film, continuing on from his transformative work on Thor: Ragnarok. Waititi's influence on Thor, both the films and the character, cannot be understated. He put his stamp on the franchise by injecting fun and color, as well as the use of Led Zeppelin's ''Immigrant Song'' in Ragnarok, changing the style of the movies vastly from Thor: The Dark World. Waititi continues this styling through to Thor: Love & Thunder's trailer, shown by the use of one particular Guns N' Roses song, which could hint at Thor's journey in the film.

The song used in the Thor: Love & Thunder trailer is one of Guns N' Roses most famous, "Sweet Child o' Mine", released in 1988. Despite their status as one of the most iconic rock bands of all time, "Sweet Child o' Mine" was the band's only number 1 single in the US. In a similar vein, none of Led Zeppelin's songs ever reached number one—not even Ragnarok's "Immigrant Song".

The Guns N' Roses song is actually very topical for Thor: Love & Thunder, as it was written by frontman Axl Rose as a love song for his future wife, Erin Everly. Given a huge part of the upcoming film is the return of Thor's former love interest, Jane Foster, this song might signal a rekindling of the two's relationship. It's clear from the look Thor gives Jane in the trailer, as she valiantly wields Mjolnir, that his feelings for her haven't faded, and though years may have separated the two, there could still be something between them.

The ballad ''Sweet Child o' Mine'', details how the singer's love interest provides a safe haven for them, where they can hide and ''pray that the thunder and the rain would quietly pass me by.'' These lyrics regarding thunder and rain are especially significant to Thor, as he is the God of these elements. Yet, the Thor: Love & Thunder teaser trailer hints that he wants to be more than this, as he buries the powerful weapon Stormbreaker and claims that his ''super-heroing days are over.'' Therefore the lyrics could predict Thor's ending, as he might literally wish for the thunder and rain to pass him by so he can have peace and live out his days with Jane.

Thor and Jane's relationship has been drastically overshadowed and underdeveloped throughout their time in the MCU. The two were an interesting pair, as they inherently implied a mixture of whimsical magic and the rigidity of science. Their drifting away from each other as the MCU continued to expand was a true shame, but hopefully, the Guns N' Roses song in the Thor: Love & Thunder trailer can hint at rekindling the MCU romance once and for all.
