Thor: Love and Thunder is making Thor’s original costume MCU canon. While Chris Hemsworth’s character has always worn suits that are inspired by Thor’s comic design, the MCU has thus far avoided recreating his most iconic costume. As things stand, it’s not a part of the movies’ interpretation of the character.
The direction taken by MCU Phase 4 shows that Marvel is more willing to embrace its characters’ comic book roots than it was in the past. This new approach was on display in the MCU’s first Disney+ show, which debuted the exact costumes worn by Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Vision in the classic Avengers comics. Loki incorporated the God of Mischief’s Silver Age look by introducing a variant of the villain played by Richard E. Grant. Hawkeye didn’t go quite as far with Clint Barton as the others did with their characters, but the series did find a place for his original outfit via a sketch made by Kate Bishop. In most of these situations, the classic suits were utilized as Easter eggs.
The Thor: Love and Thunder trailer reveals that Thor is about to don his own Silver Age costume. At the 0:02 mark, Thor can be seen running through a forest in his sleeveless black outfit, bright red cape, yellow and black boots, tight blue pants, and winged helmet that he wore when he first burst onto the scene in 1962’s Journey Into Mystery #83. Out of all the costumes he’s worn over the years, this is the one that’s the most well-known, especially since it was used for so long. While he would occasionally get a short-lived new look, this particular design was employed by the comic for more than four decades in The Avengers and his solo series. The fact that he’s wearing it in the trailer proves it’s about to be canon in the MCU.
Marvel has founded ways to work in elements of Thor's costume into several of his MCU designs, but has yet to use all of them together. For instance, he’s gone without sleeves many times before and the cape is of course included in most of his costumes. The yellow and black boots and the blue pants, on the other hand, have never been seen on the big screen, and the winged helmet was worn only once, which was during his coronation ceremony in the first movie. As for the chestpiece, the one seen in the Thor: Love and Thunder trailer is the closest it's ever looked to Thor’s original design.
The classic costume’s long-awaited and arguably overdue MCU debut raises questions about where it fits into the movie’s plan for the character. Since the trailer shows his appearance maturing as he runs, it’s likely that the outfit represents a phase in Thor’s life that already passed by. That makes sense, considering that it was already known that Thor wore the helmet in the adventures that preceded his MCU story. For now, it’s unclear if Thor: Love and Thunder will spend any length of time exploring this chapter in Thor’s past. But even if the suit really is just an Easter egg, its mere inclusion makes it a part of Thor’s history in the MCU.
