A simulation of the NBA postseason, created within NBA 2K22, suggests that the Phoenix Suns will win the NBA Finals and be crowned world champions. The 2022 National Basketball League playoffs recently kicked off on April 16, promising intense matchups between all-star teams like the Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies. Fans can enjoy the NBA playoffs in VR through Rec Room, and NBA 2K22 might give a sneak peak at how each round will progress.
Released in September 2021, NBA 2K22 introduces a plethora of new features to the long-running sports series. Many considered NBA 2K21 to be a disappointment, so the most recent entry in the franchise made both subtle tweaks and major overhauls to various in-game systems. Each individual game feels more authentic thanks to improved stamina systems, shot mechanics and changes to the general flow of gameplay. NBA 2K22's MyCareer mode also introduces new and immersive ways to interact with The City, and other modes like MyTeam add further variety to the experience. Screen Rant's review of NBA 2K22 does bring up troublesome microtransactions, but in general the game is an amazing adaptation of real basketball.
Now NBA 2K has shared an in-game approximation of the NBA 2022 playoffs, outlining which teams may progress to the NBA Finals and win it all. The extensive simulation shows exact playoff wins and guesses which players will contribute the most. NBA 2K22 predicts that the Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies will progress to the Western Conference Finals and the Suns will win 4/2. Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks are estimated to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 4/0 in the Eastern Conference Finals. The postseason will end with the Suns beating the Bucks 4/3, earning Finals MVP Devin Booker and his team the title of 2022 World Champions.
While the NBA 2K22 breakdown of the 2022 playoffs is extensive and believable, video games are not always able to accurately predict actual sporting events. Earlier this year Madden NFL made a Super Bowl prediction, with virtual victory going to the Cincinnati Bengals over the LA Rams. While Madden NFL's simulation of a close back-and-forth game was accurate, in reality the Rams actually beat the Bengals with a final score of 23-20. Both Madden NFL and NBA 2K strive for realism and authenticity, but any digital recreation of a real-world event is sure to be less than completely accurate.
The NBA playoffs just started recently, but NBA 2K22 can already predict the winner of the entire tournament based purely on logic and statistics. Real sports are about more than numbers, however, so only time will tell which teams actually make it to the Finals and take home the trophy. Phoenix Suns fans will likely be excited by the predication, but fans of other all-star teams should always keep the faith.
NBA 2K22 is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC and Apple Arcade.
