Taika Waititi and creator David Jenkins tease Stede and Ed story details for Our Flag Means Death season 2. The former is best known as director of 2017's Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, in which he also provides the voice of Korg. At the same time, Waititi also frequently produces, writes, directs, and stars in various projects outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of his latest is the popular pirate romantic-comedy Our Flag Means Death, which premiered on HBO Max last month.
Created by People of Earth alum David Jenkins, Our Flag Means Death centers on Stede Bonnet, an 18th century English aristocrat who abandons his comfortable life and family in order to become a pirate, despite having no prior experience at sea. Rhys Darby leads the cast as Captain Bonnet, the self-proclaimed "Gentleman Pirate," and Waititi stars as the legendary pirate captain Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. Our Flag Means Death features a large ensemble cast which also includes Kristian Nairn, Nathan Ford, Samson Kayo, Rory Kinnear, Con O'Neill, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, David Fane, Joel Fry, Guz Khan and Matthew Maher.
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Waititi and Jenkins talked about what Stede and Blackbeard's relationship could potentially look like in season 2. The two characters developed a deep romance over the first season before eventually falling out by the finale's end. Waititi admitted to being in the dark about future storylines, while Jenkins suggested the second season could find both Stede and Blackbeard trying to put themselves back together following heartbreak. See what they shared below:
Waititi: Well, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m waiting to find out too because this is all in David’s brain. I just look forward, if and, hopefully, when we go forward again, to see that time when they are in the same room together again. All of those little social nuances and details that we all relate to, I want to see that stuff. It’s like the opening of “Grease” after their summer fling.
Jenkins: I think watching Blackbeard try to put himself back together and Stede try to put himself back together and both reorient themselves. This is their first love, which means that it’s the first time that Blackbeard’s ever been hurt this badly. You’re rocked when that happens. You go into a crisis.

The Our Flag Means Death season 1 finale certainly does not find Stede and Ed on the best of terms, as a major cliffhanger sees Blackbeard steal Captain Bonnet's ship, the Revenge. Blackbeard also reclaims his old personality, the Kraken, after Stede breaks his heart by returning to his wife. This is one notable change from the true story of Bonnet and Blackbeard on which the show is based and was likely made in order to set up the chief conflict of a potential Our Flag Means Death season 2. Based on Jenkins' comments, it sounds like both Stede and Ed will kick off season 2 in vastly different places from where they began the series.
Our Flag Means Death has not officially been renewed for a second season, though if its popularity is any indication, a renewal should be coming very soon. According to Parrot Analytics, Our Flag Means Death's streaming success is comparable to Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso and Peacemaker, the latter of which HBO Max did renew for another season. Only time will tell if Our Flag Means Death returns for season 2 and where Stede and Blackbeard’s relationship is headed.
