The hit drama Lost may have debuted almost 20 years ago and ended over a decade ago, but fans are still very opinionated about the characters they feel deserved more from the survival series. Redditors have made countless threads to discuss this hot button topic, and it can be somewhat divisive.
Of the opinions out there, 10 characters come to the forefront on Reddit, proving that they have stayed in the minds of these fans despite how long it has been since the premiere of the show.
Abbadon was creepy in all the right ways. Though his appearances were brief, they helped build the mystery of the island and Charles Widmore, and fans are very adamant that he deserved a more fleshed-out back story and a longer amount of screen time in the series.
coconutjoe83 wrote that Abbadon "was so mysterious" and noting that those are their "favorite Lost characters - the ones that are mystical and have some sort of subtle (and not so subtle) connection to the island." He certainly did add a lot of strange connections and intrigue to the series, and Abbadon isn't often given enough credit for helping contribute to this tone.
Though Juliet was a member of the main cast, her role in the series is often underplayed compared to her companions like Jack, Sawyer, and Ben. She was just as much a part of the season 5 Dharma plotline as them, and her sacrifice is the only reason the survivors made it back to 2007 in the time jump. Hers has even been ranked as one of the saddest deaths in Lost.
JulietLaFleur, a notable Juliet fan, wrote "Forever my fave. Juliet was no-nonsense and never one to pine over or chase after a man like Kate." She was definitely one of the most independent female characters to come out of the series, and there are a lot of unappreciated Juliet moments.
Brave, headstrong, and at times, arrogant, Ana Lucia received her fair share of love and hate during her character journey on Lost. However, despite her somewhat unlikeable personality, many fans still argue that she deserved better and that her arc is severely underrated.
VbardV admits that Ana Lucia "deserves the hate that she gets in a sense, but I think she had strong development potential if they had given her the time to do so." It's easy to see where their argument comes from, and perhaps Ana Lucia was just gone too soon in the series.
Frank is one of the good ones. Friendly, honest, and a darn good pilot, he often doesn't receive the praise that he deserves and is constantly overshadowed by other survivors in the seasons he was featured in.
adayinapril wrote, simply, "Rewatching Lost so every evening I'm reminded of Frank's underrated contribution." It would probably take a rewatch to catch all of his underappreciated wisecracks and the feeling of normalcy that he brought to the series, but luckily there are Redditors out there to remind the Lost fandom of what Frank brings to the table.
Faraday was a fan-favorite Lost character to come out of the scientist expedition storyline, possibly surpassed only by Miles. His connection to the island and the mysterious Eloise was ripe for development throughout the series, and he had some of the greatest potential out of all the more "minor" characters.
sofyamarmeladov wrote that they "would have liked to see more of Faraday's story and more of his plot, and his mother's story," going on to say that they "didn't feel like that was explored enough..." Many other Redditors echoed their sentiment, and Faraday is clearly one of those characters with relatively little screen time who left a lasting impression.
The unofficial leader of the Others and Jacob's right-hand man, Richard represented everything that was tantalizing and curious about the island. His immortality and omnipresence made him one of the most mysterious characters on the show, and though he does get a lot of love, Redditors still argue that he deserves even more.
In agreement with a previous post, inezzyinlove argued "the writing for Richard's backstory was some truly incredible work, I NEVER saw that coming!" The reveal that he was once a slave on the Black Rock was definitely one of the biggest shockers of Lost, and it's probably the reason why so many viewes believe he is an underrated character.
Shannon gets a lot of hate, sometimes to the point that it doesn't even make sense anymore. She may have started off as spoiled, selfish, and rude, but she ended up as one of the more soft and sensitive survivors of the island. Her romance with Sayid was refreshing, and the point of a character like Shannon was to represent growth.
In another thread, sofyamarmeladov wrote that "Shannon's redemption and growth were really genuine. She was a decent character and definitely doesn't get enough credit." And it's true - she really does deserve more.
Mr. Eko was gone far, far too soon. Though it was the actor's choice to sever ties with the series, the writers still did a poor job of finishing his arc with the limited time and resources that they had. Fans are very united in their belief of how underrated his character is, and many believe he has one of the best storylines in the entirety of Lost.
ludiloko wrote that "as for Eko, I think a lot of people tend to forget him because he was only around for one season. His character was great, and he had a lot of potential..." Of course, no one on Reddit is forgetting about the intriguing priest, and Eko's name was one of the most repeated in the entire "underrated" discussion.
As one of the "superpower" characters in Lost, Miles was interesting and compelling from the very beginning. The combination of this quality with his provocative personality and sense of humor then made him one of the most intriguing in the series, and Redditors believe he is severely underrated.
For Foreveramateur, Miles is not given enough credit. They wrote "From season 4 onwards he is a major character, but he's barely talked about. He has great chemistry with everybody and he's hilarious." Miles helped keep the spice of the series alive when Sawyer mellowed out in season 6, and he's definitely an under-the-radar character who shouldn't be.
Though Sayid was a prominent character from the very beginning, on the same line as characters like Jack and Locke, he was still a lot more than many viewers give him credit for. And people have taken to Reddit to air their grievances.
SaphfireSoul in particular has a lot to say about the matter. They wrote "If we're talking about underrated and underappreciated on the island I would say Sayid. He does SO MUCH from the very first episode and is always trying to contribute to the group and atone for his past." His actions were never selfish like Locke, Sawyer, or Jack showed they were capable of, and it's time Sayid gets more recognition for his superb character traits.
