Regular TikTok users may have come across a bizarre trend where people are seen peeling raw eggs. TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps with hundreds of millions of users around the world. In fact, it was reportedly the most downloaded app worldwide in 2021, ahead of Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat in that order.
TikTok specifically remains one of the most popular apps among teens and young people, and despite all the controversies it has attracted over the years. It is also the home for many popular trends and challenges that attract the young and the young-at-heart. While some of those challenges might be unsavory and even dangerous at times, others, like the egg-peeling challenge, are far more wholesome.
The latest viral trend on TikTok involves people peeling raw eggs without breaking the thin membrane inside, as highlighted by CNET. The practice involves removing every last fragment of the shell from the egg without puncturing the sac. People are evidently allowed to use any number of tools, including tweezers, blemish extractors, cuticle pushers, and even toothpicks, with the only rule being that the eggs have to be completely raw and uncooked. While some are skillful enough to peel the eggs perfectly without breaking them, most end up with broken whites and yolks that are perfect for an omelet or scrambled eggs.
One of the successful egg-peelers is TikTok user @btypep who uses rounded blackhead extraction tools and surgical tweezers to get the job done. Others, like @itxhurts2know, seemingly gave up after several unsuccessful attempts, saying "Don't waste your time. It friggin popped at the end cause it's IMPOSSIBLE." TikTok user Thomas Salwasser has also jumped on the egg-peeling bandwagon and has hosted livestreams peeling raw eggs. While the process can be long and painstaking, it is captivating social media users everywhere.
In fact, the trend is transcending TikTok, and has now spread to YouTube, where many popular streamers and vloggers discuss how much they enjoy these videos. For example, YouTuber Ludwig posted a video a few weeks ago explaining how enjoyable the egg-peeling challenge is. While peeling raw eggs is a recent trend on social media, the practice itself is quite old. Doctors and dentists have been doing this as part of their surgical skill development for a long time, according to Practical Implant Dentistry. In spite of its origins, no one probably could have envisaged that it would eventually become a viral TikTok trend.
