LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga Gameplay Overview Trailer Breakdown

A new Gameplay Overview trailer for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has arrived, and it's teasing several new features, planets, characters, and more ahead of the game's April 2022 release date. The newest LEGO Skywalker Saga trailer, which clocks in right over six minutes, has plenty to pore over. For those interested in checking out the finer details of the trailer, here's a full breakdown of the Skywalker Saga's new Gameplay Overview video.

After multiple delays, the new trailer comes along with a confirmed release date for LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga: April 5, 2022. Despite having multiple release windows in the past, it looks like the newest LEGO title will finally be released once and for all. For the countless Star Wars fans out there, it looks like that patience will pay off - the Gameplay Overview trailer looks incredibly cool.

The Holoprojector will serve as an in-game menu in LEGO Skywalker Saga. This is what will allow players to travel to other planets, unlock and select characters, view missions, and access a whole lot of other features. Since the game is covering all nine episodes of Star Wars, players will also have the option to select which movie they'd like to play through. The trilogies can be played through in any order, which is a great feature. It means those who've played the older LEGO Star Wars games may want to jump ahead to see what The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker have in store for them instead (each film will have new and original content - so it's not like retreading the same game).

From the beginning of the trailer, combat in LEGO's Skywalker Saga looks like a vast improvement over past entries. Rather than a Zelda-like Hearts system, characters now have health bars - and enemies have them, too. This is a nice improvement from the typical way fighting enemies worked - players would attack them, and after so many hits, they'd burst into LEGO bricks. Now, there's a quantifiable amount of health on display, so players will know when they've got their foes nearly defeated.

The weapons on display in the LEGO Skywalker Saga Overview Gameplay trailer also look quite impressive. The over-the-shoulder shooting mechanics that were in LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens are back, and lightsaber fights look as exciting as ever. Of course, lightsaber duels have always been a massive draw for most Star Wars video games, and the Jedi and Sith featured in the new Skywalker Saga trailer look equally fearsome and powerful.

The trailer revealed new Star Wars characters for Skywalker Saga, all thanks to showing off an in-game menu that serves as a character selection screen. The game boasts over 300 playable characters, and nearly half of these have been confirmed thanks to previous footage and screenshots. Play-styles of some characters - like Jabba the Hutt slinking across the sand and Mace Windu swinging his purple lightsaber - are on full display here. However, some new characters - like The Rise of Skywalker's Carib Diss - can be glimpsed from the menu.

The new LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga trailer also teases multiple Knights of Ren (and it's certainly possible all of them will be playable) as well as showing additional footage of newer characters like Babu Frik. Fan-favorites like Boba Fett and BB-8 also get plenty of screentime, even though these characters had been previously confirmed. Even prequel characters like Bail Organa and Captain Antilles are shown during the Gameplay Overview as playable.

Of course, no Star Wars game is complete without its vehicles, and LEGO Skywalker Saga looks to have plenty to offer. Both Luke Skywalker's X-Wing and Poe Dameron's are featured in the trailer, and the iconic Millennium Falcon is shown engaging with a Star Destroyer. Star Wars games have a long history with space combat sims, like TIE Fighter and the more-recent Squadrons, so it's great to see some of this preserved in LEGO form.

The planets in LEGO Skywalker Saga have seemingly been all confirmed now thanks to the new Gameplay Overview trailer. In a previous preview, some parts of the in-game map were hidden. However, the latest reveal shows additional planets like Exegol from Episode 9. In-game, players will be able to use the Holoprojector to open up the map and travel to available planets throughout the galaxy.

Based on what's shown in the latest trailer, space traversal isn't entirely safe. As players travel the galaxy, they may become engaged in dogfights with Imperials or other villains. This should add a bit of open-world mechanics seen in LEGO's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit games, since it looks like players can travel fairly freely in LEGO Skywalker Saga, barring any story-related constraints.

There are many exciting gameplay mechanics shown off for LEGO Skywalker Saga, including Rey with a Net Launcher. Characters can come equipped with multiple weapons and items, allowing them to unlock more secrets, find rare items, and get to hard-to-reach places. Collectibles are a large part of LEGO video games, and Skywalker Saga will be no different. Kyber Crystals can be collected to unlock new features and upgrades.

The abilities system is one of the more exciting new features for LEGO Skywalker Saga. With classes like Scoundrel, Jedi, Dark Side, and Astromech Droid showcased - each with their own set of abilities to upgrade - it looks as if Skywalker Saga will have more customizability options than any LEGO game before it. With less than three months to go before LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga releases, additional news regarding characters, planets, and gameplay may start to trickle out to the public. However, it's likely the game will keep some surprises in store for those who play it, so a full character list may not be available until after its release date. In the meantime, this new Gameplay Overview trailer has given fans plenty to be excited about while they wait.
