Mortal Kombat 2 Officially Happening At Warner Bros | Screen Rant

Mortal Kombat 2 is officially moving forward, as New Line hires Moon Knight's Jeremy Slater to write the script. The popular video game franchise got a second chance to become a live-action movie franchise in 2021. The reboot came after the original Mortal Kombat franchise from the 90s stalled after just two films. 2021's Mortal Kombat focused on an original character Cole Young (Lewis Tan) as he trained with other fighters like Sonya Blade and Jax to protect Earth.

As one of Warner Bros.' 2021 movies, Mortal Kombat received a simultaneous release on HBO Max and in theaters. Although the film's box office wasn't all that impressive, Mortal Kombat was HBO Max's most-streamed movie of WB's same-day release slate. This bolstered hopes of Mortal Kombat 2 happening before too long. The movie's ending directly set up what would happen in a sequel if the franchise was allowed to continue, but months went by without any real updates on the franchise's future.

According to a new report from Deadline, Mortal Kombat 2 is officially happening. New Line and Warner Bros. are taking the necessary steps to continue the franchise by hiring Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella AcademyMoon Knight) to write the script. The outlet notes that no other deals are in place for the sequel, meaning director Simon McQuoid and the various cast members still need to agree to terms of their own to return for Mortal Kombat 2. No release date is set at this time either.

Based on the end of Mortal Kombat, the sequel's story should follow Cole Young and others as they recruit new Champions of Earth, such as Johnny Cage. The first film quite famously didn't include the fighting tournament audiences expected, but Mortal Kombat 2 should deliver on that promise as Shang Tsung sends a new army to claim Earth. This should include the return of Sub-Zero as Noob Saboit too. Jeremy Slater is now in charge of bringing these storylines together, as he takes over the story Dave Callaham, Greg Russo, and Oren Uziel formed for the first film.

Mortal Kombat 2 moving forward right now could mean that the sequel will be ready for release sometime in 2023 or 2024. While there are plenty of details yet to be revealed, one that could fly under the radar is how the sequel is released. Mortal Kombat wasn't a big box office performer thanks to the pandemic but it was a huge hit on HBO Max. It is possible New Line and Warner Bros. could make Mortal Kombat 2 a high-profile HBO Max exclusive movie. In any case, hopefully Slater's involvement can help Mortal Kombat 2 have a stronger reception than the first movie.
