Everyone loves a wedding--especially one that exists in the glamorous setting of cinema. Film weddings are a perfect way to cap off a romance, giving both the characters and viewers some closure regarding the specific relationship, while celebrating the story of star-crossed lovers that finally found their way to one another.
Recently, several dozen Redditors shared their opinions on their favorite wedding scenes from movies in one long thread on the popular website. Choices ran the gamut of genres, from drama to comedy, even touching on some classic films that are not necessarily known for their romantic elements. Indeed, the people of Reddit have spoken in regard to their favorite weddings in film.
One Reddit user, Galahad258, suggests "Will and Elizabeth on the ship during the battle with Davy Jones on Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." In their post, the user references the scene in which Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan get married while in the midst of battle, forcing Captain Barbossa to perform the ceremony for them.
Not all weddings necessarily need all the pomp and frill of a traditional ceremony. Indeed, some do just as well with nothing more than the bride and groom and someone to officiate the ceremony. Such is the case for Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan in the third Pirates of the Caribbean film, in one of the best scenes of the Pirates franchise.
Redditor rondonjon writes "I have to say the Deerhunter scene may be the most extended wedding in a movie. It also captured a very specific wedding culture quite beautifully." Another user, NoDisintigrationz, says about the scene that "it'd be the only wedding I've ever enjoyed."
These two Redditors refer to the famously long wedding scene in The Deer Hunter, a 1978 film depicting how the Vietnam war affected three steelworkers. This scene takes up a whopping 51 minutes of the already 3-hour film, but as the above posts mention, beautifully captures the cultural significance of the wedding ceremony itself.
One Redditor by the name of Jack-Cremation puts forth the wedding depicted in My Best Friend's Girl, recalling when "Dane/Tank finally turns back crazy, paid for disruption... and does every hijinx imaginable," going on to call the sequence "hilarious."
My Best Friend's Girl is a 2008 romantic comedy starring Dane Cook, Jason Biggs, and Kate Hudson. The wedding scene depicted in the film is a crash course in what every bride and groom fears might happen on their big day, and is, as the above Reddit post suggests, utterly hilarious.
Redditor Nessidy writes "Fiddler on the Roof's wedding still brings me and my mom to tears." They refer to the film adaptation of the classic Broadway musical of the same name, which includes the marriage of Tzeitel and Motel, star-crossed lovers that very nearly lost each other when Tzietel was betrothed to another man.
Musical theater fans will no doubt remember the iconic song "Sunrise, Sunset," which the bride's father and mother sing during this scene, a song that became the most famous musical piece from the show. Coming at the halfway point of the film, this wedding scene is quite a tear-jerker for anyone invested in Tzeitel and Motel's relationship.
One respondent by the handle of mlcarter_ga humorously responds to the original post's question of best movie scenes by writing, "Well, Shrek, I mean, really," referring to the closing sequence of the original Shrek film, where Shrek and Fiona are married in the Swamp.
Fans of the film may be surprised that Shrek just celebrated its 20th anniversary, and yet the wedding scene still seems fresh, as the cast of the film (who double as the audience at the ceremony) belt out "I'm A Believer" just before the credits roll, capping off the first installment of a classic animated franchise.
"The Wedding Singer," suggests RyfromtheChi, going on to quote the movie's classic lines, "Best guitar player in the wooorld! Self-taught, no lessons. Thank you very much." This suggestion seems to have been quite popular among other Reddit users, who chime in with favorite quotes of their own from the film.
The Wedding Singer, as the name implies, includes plenty of wedding scenes as Adam Sandler's character struggles to get over his own ex while attending wedding after wedding. However, the scene that many fans are likely referring to when lauding the film may be the finale, wherein Sandler and Drew Barrymore's characters are wed.
User ScientificFlamingo recalls the original post's mention of the wedding from Crazy Rich Asians, adding "The wedding scene was absolutely beautiful. I've never seen anything quite like it." Other Redditors added in the comments that the scene brought them to tears, somewhat unexpectedly.
Crazy Rich Asians is certainly a worthy inclusion for anyone looking for a film with a terrific wedding scene. The 2018 runaway hit had a perfect balance of comedy and emotion, making for a wonderfully portrayed wedding that is quite impressive in the final cut of the film, bringing the story to a satisfying close.
Certain people that responded to the prompt simply couldn't refuse an allusion to one of the greatest films of all time. Reddit user delsangron suggests The Godfather's wedding, with another Redditor, DCBronzeAge, adding that this "may be one of the best opening scenes in all of cinema."
The often-parodied Godfather film opens on the wedding day of Don Corleone's daughter, in a sequence that takes up much of the first act of the movie. Nevertheless, many of the moments depicted throughout the lavish wedding ceremony have become iconic over the course of cinematic history, just like the movie to which they belong.
Redditor FunAward9 praises everything about the wedding of Edward and Bella in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1. "The song choice" they laud, alluding to "Flightless Bird, American Mouth" by Iron & Wine, "was phenomenal." They go on to praise "the wedding speeches, the set design, [and] the honeymoon montage."
Though some viewers have argued that Bella ignored dozens of red flags from Edward, fans of the franchise absolutely love everything about the couple's wedding scene. It brings to a close the well-known love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob, with Kristen Stewart's character ultimately choosing Edward to become her lawfully wedded husband.
Reddit user 18thTimesACharm can't help but love the wedding scene from the beginning of Love, Actually, citing the "musicians planted in the congregation," who surprised the bride and groom by playing the Beatles' "Love Is All You Need" as they left the chapel. In the film, Andrew Lincoln's character, the best man at the wedding, arranges a loving tribute for the bride and groom by having these musicians hide in the audience until the opportune moment.
While the couple at hand, played by Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor, may not necessarily be every viewer's favorite match (Andrew Lincoln's character certainly makes a strong argument to be paired up with Knightley), few could deny how moving this scene really is.
