The Top 10 Movies That Definitely Deserve A Sequel, According To Ranker

So many movies end up with sequels, not all of them good, and many great ones that deserve to carry on their stories never get them. Of course, there are plenty of classics that stand on their own and do not need to continue on, and a sequel would risk ruining the original movie.

With that in mind, Ranker has asked movie fans to list the titles that deserve a follow-up to continue their great stories. Which favorites are annoyingly left unfinished? These are the films the Ranker audience feels deserve a sequel, across several categories and genres.

Many may agree that it is quite surprising that this movie hasn't had many sequels the way animated pictures can often overdo it - especially since it won many awards, including an Oscar. Instead, Pixar chose to follow up Monsters, Inc. with a prequel called Monsters University, as well as a fairly new series on Disney+ called Monsters At Work, which includes both old and new characters.

But people still very much love the original and hope to see Mike and Sully return to the big screen with Boo. And certainly, John Goodman and Billy Crystal could return to voice the two monster buddies.

Obviously, this movie was quite popular in its time because it inspired multiple long-running spin-offs. The sci-fi action thriller revolves around an alien ring that can transport people across the galaxy. It's a fantastic plot with a myriad of possibilities and there is a rumor that a reboot might be in the works, as reported by Cheatsheet.

The original Stargate starred Kurt Russell and James Spader, though neither were crazy about the script at the time. However, with a script worthy of the two fantastic actors, who knows what could happen and fans are hoping for a continued adventure through the stargates.

Will Smith worked hard to get this movie off the ground and it paid off as the box-office hit is one of Smith's highest-grossing movies. In it, Smith plays a grumpy alcoholic with superpowers. Will Smith gets to really play into his great sense of humor with this character and Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron joining him. The antihero is a lead-up to fans getting such recent characters on the big screen as Deadpool and Peacemaker.

Will Smith must have heard the excited chatter that people want a sequel to this movie and he listened. Hancock 2 is in the works and listed on IMDb. With any luck, the curmudgeon of a hero may grace theaters again soon.

This Oscar-winning animated film about a big city inhabited by animals follows a rookie cop and jaded con artist through several misadventures. The magnificent supporting animals are really what gives Zootopia its high level of humor. The voice cast includes the likes of Octavia Spencer, J.K. Simmons, Idris Elba, and Shakira, just to name a few.

It seems as though Ranker voters are going to get their wish, as two sequels to Zootopia are apparently in the works. It's unclear as to whether it will be a series that streams on Disney+ or feature film, but either way, the marvelous mammals of Zootopia will be returning soon.

While Dredd has become a cult classic and only really gained notoriety after being brought to the small screen, this dystopian action film received quite a bit of positive feedback. Many blamed poor marketing on its lack of success. It even includes one of the best female villains, Ma-Ma, played by Lena Headey.

The Karl Urban helmed movie reimagined a darker world compared to  Silvester Stallone's 1995 picture Judge Dredd. Having gained such notoriety and maintaining a solid fanbase to this day, it's surprising that a sequel hasn't been made. The web is full of speculation, but no real certainty. Fans can only hope that this strong storyline will get new life in some form soon.

It's surprising that a sequel hasn't come up sooner for Beetlejuice, Tim Burton's classic fantasy/horror comedy starring Michael Keaton in the titular role and joined by Gina Davis and Alec Baldwin. The supporting cast of comic actors is phenomenal. The movie has inspired an animated TV series, video games and even a musical.

In fact, a sequel has been discussed since the original hit theaters and several have been in the works over the years. It's only now that the second Beetlejuice movie is confirmed and principal photography is set to start in summer 2022, with Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton attached. So now, it's only a matter of time!

Fans who liked the sci-fi action movie, Edge Of Tomorrow, which is almost a blend of Starship Troopers and Groundhog Day, will be happy to know that something is in the works. It may not be a sequel, though, but instead, a TV series. And with a premise a great as this, there are a lot of possibilities.

The movie has fantastic action sequences, scary aliens, and best of all, the tough-as-nails Rita played by Emily Blunt whipping Tom Cruise's character into shape. This award-winning blockbuster gets the heart pounding and everyone guessing until the end. Cross fingers for a sequel that the TV series does that again.

Writer/director Luc Besson is a master of his craft and proves it with this over-the-top sci-fi adventure starring Milla Jovovich and Bruce Willis. Chris Tucker and Gary Oldman add real texture to the light-hearted cult classic. The Fifth Element includes midair fights, space opera, and aliens unlike anything the moviegoing public had seen before, not to mention costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Fans would love a sequel and, in fact, a script has been written, as reported by GiantFreakinRobot. Unfortunately, it apparently had a lot of problems and the movie didn't do well at the box office, only gaining acclaim after it moved to the small screen. Still, one can always hope for a miracle.

This superhero horror film is based on a character from DC Comics' Hellblazer series. Keanu Reeves plays the lead, an exorcist with a lot of cool gadgets. Djimon Hounsou, Tilda Swinton, and Rachel Weisz are in the cast, as well. The movie debuted to mixed reviews and mediocre box office, but it had received an R rating because of its religious themes.

The movie did receive a novelization and video game and even had a short-lived TV series. Keanu Reeves has expressed interest in reprising the role and a sequel is being discussed. That said, John Constantine does exist in the DC Universe and could reappear in any number of DCEU franchises.

This cyberpunk sci-fi film is based on the manga by Yukito Kishiro, directed by Robert Rodriguez, and produced by James Cameron. The cast includes Rosa Salazar in the titular role, as well as Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and Jennifer Connelly. It debuted to mixed reviews, however, fans loved the special effects, action sequences, and Salazar's character.

Fans have been supporting a sequel for quite some time, but no news about development has been announced. The movie is now owned by Disney and both Rodriguez and Cameron insist that they are interested in a second movie, according to Collider, so there may be hope yet.
