Benedict Cumberbatch opened up about how reshoots for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been “tough for everyone.” After the events of last year’s box-office giant Spider-Man: No Way Home saw the concept of the multiverse blown wide open, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to focus on the subsequent fallout. Cumberbatch will return to his role as Doctor Stephen Strange alongside Elizabeth Olsen who will return as Wanda Maximoff, following on from the events of Wandavision, which saw her become the all-power Scarlett Witch. Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor will also star alongside Marvel newcomer Xochitl Gomez, who will bring America Chavez to the big screen for the very first time.
Given the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with a major schedule reshuffle from Marvel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has not had an easy road throughout its production. Initially slated for release in May 2021, the highly-anticipated sequel will now hit theatres in just under two months, with Cumberbatch recently revealing that the film is still currently undergoing reshoots in LA. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to be one of the biggest MCU projects to date and is rumored to feature a number of unexpected appearances, given that the concept of the multiverse allows for a limitless number of possibilities as to who, or what could cross over into the MCU timeline.
Now, currently in the midst of promoting his most recent project The Power of the Dog, Cumberbatch sat down with Deadline and opened up about the "tough" journey he's had through Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' production. The actor cited the impact of the pandemic on the film's already lengthy production schedule, stating that it has been "tough for everyone." The star went on to say that it has, however, been an "incredibly enjoyable" experience, no less so than when he previously filmed 2016's Doctor Strange. Cumberbatch reiterated that the entire process has been "very rewarding" nonetheless. Check out Cumberbatch's full quote below.
It’s been tough. I’ll be honest with you. It’s had quite a journey, this film. But not in a kind of poor me way, just like the nature of where we’re at. To try and make a massive film like that under the constrictions of a pandemic and the delays that have ensued, partly because of The Power of the Dog, but also because of everything that was lined up and had to be pushed back from Marvel. It’s been tough for everyone. Also, incredibly enjoyable and no less enjoyable than the first one. So, I hope the results are as good, but yeah, I think it can’t be underestimated. It’s really… This is a film that has a lot of resources. It’s nothing compared to the struggles of live performance. It’s really, it’s tough, but very rewarding, very fun.
Earlier on in the interview, Cumberbatch also stated that "carrying a Marvel film is pretty hefty stuff" and involves an "utterly different set of muscles," when discussing the idea of comparing his previous roles. The star also previously opened up about how Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness acts as a journey of self discovery for his character, going on to say audiences will witness some "unexpected conclusions." Very little else is known about what can be expected from the Doctor Strange sequel, however, recent teasers have previewed a film that looks to be on a scale quite unlike anything that's been seen within the MCU before.
Given the expected scope of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the fact it is still in the process of reshoots, despite having begun filming back in November 2020, it's certainly understandable that the process has been rather tough on Cumberbatch and those involved. Cumberbatch's comments are likely to fuel the already high levels of anticipation that surround this film, as it's clear that an immense amount of hard work has been contributed by both the cast and crew. As for now, there isn't long to go until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits the big screen and given what's been teased so far, it seems it will have been entirely worth the wait.
