Tom Cruise Flew a Helicopter into Simon Pegg's Garden For M:I7 Viewing

Tom Cruise flew a helicopter into Simon Pegg's garden for a Mission: Impossible 7 viewing. Riding off the critical and commercial success of Mission: Impossible - Fallout in 2018, two more sequels were announced shortly after, which are reportedly being planned as a sendoff for Tom Cruise who has been the face of the film franchise since it began in 1996. Pegg, on the other hand, joined the franchise in 2006's Mission: Impossible III as IMF Agent Benji Dunn.

Possibly the penultimate film in the franchise, Mission:Impossible 7 will return many familiar faces from Ethan Hunt's team for yet another impossible mission, including Pegg as Benji and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell. Also returning are Rebecca Ferguson's former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust who allied with Hunt's team during the past two films, along with Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, a black market arms dealer known as the White Widow. Hayley Atwell and Esai Morales will also both make their franchise debuts, the former as Hunt's potential partner and the latter being the film's primary villain. M:I 7 will be the third installment in the series directed by Cruise's frequent collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie.

During a discussion with Square Mile, Pegg reflected on his 15-year friendship with Cruise which began on M:I III, sharing a recent story about how the action star arrived at his house in Hertfordshire in the most Tom Cruise-way possible – by landing his helicopter in Pegg's garden. The purpose of Cruise's dramatic arrival, Pegg reveals, was so that they could screen a Mission: Impossible 7 sizzle reel together. Read what he had to say below:

"[Cruise] landed his f**ing chopper in my garden just before Christmas and came round for a cup of tea... He’d always buzz the house as he went over – so we’d run into the garden and wave. It was really silly! Hey guys, just to let you know, Tom Cruise will be flying a helicopter into my back garden later, you might want to keep an eye on the horses."

The use of term "sizzle reel" during the interview likely indicates Cruise and Pegg were screening the Mission: Impossible 7 footage screened at CinemaCon which revealed the return of Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny). The character has only appeared in the original 1996 film as the director of the IMF who betrays Hunt and his team. Other than that, the sizzle reel showed footage of a train sequence involving Cruise and Atwell's characters, as well as brief looks at newcomers Morales and Cary Elwes.

Other than the sizzle reel they watched together, Cruise's preferred method of transportation should be no surprise. For Fallout's climatic action sequence, Cruise trained extensively as a helicopter pilot, skills which he obviously hasn't let go to waste. Though parts of Mission: Impossible 7 have already been screened by the cast and others, it will be a while until the movie is seen by the general public, as its theatrical release was pushed back to the summer of 2023.
